I bought the Dominus collection but I played all of it already back then so haven't opened it

I found two games that had a Castlevania-like visual (and gameplay) called Remilia something (Touhou-related) at Yodobashi for relatively cheap. Bought them and they are also sitting on my shelf. Any opinion on it?

I'm glad since I've been pushing about Secrets design being an inherent component of Metroid that's often put aside in MetroidVanias.

Both good picks though SotN overstays its welcome after the twist IMO and dying leads to taking too long to get back into gameplay so I recommend using savestates at appropriate save locations to save time from restarting from start screen.

That's got absolutely nothing to do with it, it's about how metroidvanias have more focus on RPG mechanics such as levels and gear and NPCs and sidequests compared to Metroid-likes just being like Metroid which has none of those things. By these definitions Valdis Story is a metroidvania and Ex Vitro is a Metroid-like.

Very mediocre. It's pretty but that's about it, the combat isn't interesting and the game design is brought down by various baffling choices like only being able to equip a limited number of relics at a time for no reason and what the effects of some relics / powerups actually are.
I haven't tried 2 and I've heard conflicting opinions on it.

It's fun, but there's a lot of instant death pits and spikes that feel more in line with a traditional platformer rather than a Metroidvania. I've heard the sequel changed that, but I haven't played it yet.

The 3DS don't have any metroidvanias, this is due to the fact that by the time the 3DS was around Castlevania already died and metroidvania was still not a solidified genre so there are no 3DS metroidvania games.

You can however play all the 6 metroidvania style castlevania games from the DS and GBA libraries on your 3DS + metroid fusion, monster tale, Megaman ZX/advent, aliens Infestation, shantae games and shaman king master of spirits.

Anything where combat revolves around a dodge/parry button. I can tolerate it to an extent in 3D games, but not in 2D ones.

While I didn't put enough time in to it to really hate it, I also dropped Hollow Knight almost immediately. Something about the movement or camera bugged me, and I really dislike the art style.

>Any opinion on it?
They're not as good as the games they're imitating for the most part, but they're reasonably fun and have some decent boss battles.

>>720078384
Afterimage was fun. I also ended up being fairly disappointed with Gal Guardians 2. It's bizarre that its more linear predecessor has more interesting movement options, as opposed to just steadily unlocking an increasing number of mid-air jumps and air-dashes.

Playing Silksong reminded me how much of a B-list game Hollow Knight was (and is) compared to actually good 2D metroidvanias of that era, such as Ori.
It's not even about liking or disliking it, it's just that a cheap hostel doesn't really compare to a 5-star hotel.
It's both funny and sad how a 6.5/10 game from 2017 is a massive cultural phenomenon just because it was delayed until 2025, where the overall level of the medium is so much fucking lower.

I wish it was less linear. While it doesn't directly point where you need to go like Fusion and Prime 3 (and surely Prime 4), you really can't go off the beaten path, and the way backwards is also always locked out.

Bloodstained 2, easy. Can't wait to see that job system that they've teased in action. It's either going to ruin the progression or make it the most unique progression in the genre. I don't see a middle ground and I hope it hits the latter.

Almost done with Shadow Labyrinth. It has been, outside the Pac-Man levels, a complete and total Hollow Knight clone and I don't mean that complimentary. Still, it's been FINE overall. I've really liked the Pac-Man levels so it was worth a pirate there alone for me.

>You can choose from over 10 different classes and level up each one as you play. By leveling up, you can learn new skills and abilities. Additionally, some magic and skills can only be learned in specific classes. Skills learned in one class can be carried over to other classes if certain conditions are met, so players become stronger as they progress.

It's both. The exploration element is incredibly in-depth and if you manage to figure out the hidden techs (I do not recommend looking them up, just find them naturally), then the game opens up to the point of a 0% Run being possible. It's about as non-linear as a game in this genre can possibly be.
The fights themselves are bullet hells but they're still in a 2D Platformer perspective (MOSTLY) so you're still using whatever you find in combat as well. It's not that bad a bullet hell, either. A Normal Mode run is a decent challenge if you're pretty new to bullet hells and a Hard Mode run will put some hair on your balls. That said, there's still another two difficulties above it as well. Great game, can't stress it enough.

There is Astalon, but instead of 2 characters you can switch between 5, you start with 3 and can't switch them on the go until you get a key item, each character plays slightly different and get movement abilities that you need to use to progress.

But technically you will always want to be using the red one since she has the best mobility and range attack.

2. Super Metroid
3. Hollow Knight
4. La-Mulana 2
5. Hard to pick between SOTN/AoS so both

Honorable mentions to Rabi-Ribi, every other Castlevania, Bloodstained, Environmental Station Alpha, Nine Sols, AM2R and pretty much every Metroid game, recently started Silksong and I'm enjoying it a lot so far.

I don't particularly hated any but I wouldn't want to play Axiom Verge and the Shantae games again.

Understandable given Axiom Verge is terrible and Shantae is held up by porn

What are some shameless Metroid ripoffs aka sci-fi metroidvanias that are shooters specifically?
I finished Axiom Verge the other day and realized I've been ignoring a cool subsection of games. Environmental Station Alpha was much more amateurish in level design, art style, and I didn't like closer range melee gameplay

You have god tier movement in Castlevania games. You could get Wing Smash + Gravity Boots just after beating like 4 bosses in SoTN and it didn't require you that much skill, just knowing what to do with the tools you have on your disposal. Even in games where your fast movement options came late like Aria and Dawn, you still have teleporters next to all interesting spots and moving through the map on feet was fast enough. PoR and OoE straight up segmented all the maps so you wouldn't spend the game just going back and forth the same locations.

Rabi-Ribi has 3 qualities that /v/ love
1 it gatekeeps faggots with the art style
2 potentially hardcore gameplay
3 cute bnnuy girls

It is only natural that vee loves Rabi-Ribi, aside from those qualities Rabi-Ribi is a non-linear metroidvania which gives you heaps of freedom of when and how to progress.

Like, you can fight the underwater boss before you get the item which allows you to move freely underwater is not the intended way to do it, but you can go and do it anyway even if that will make the fight a ton harder than normal.

Playing silksong and after that i will play hollow knight. Silksong has very slow progression but when it hits it hits just right. Silksong is obviously designed in Fromsoftwares "fuck you" style but more extreme which I dont really like. It seems they went ahead and tried to make it not necessarily fun but rewarding. 18h in and I guess im at the end of normal ending and now I need to do side quests to get the final act ending

Honestly Dread really isn't that linear at all, but it's easy to think it is because of how often to stops you from back tracking.
That was a really weird design decision that to this day I'm not sure what the devs were going for with it.

Pampas & Selene did it best because both characters had their own strengths and weaknesses and swapping between them both regularly was encouraged by the mechanics and didn't feel like you were gimping yourself, unlike the other games where one character is just blatantly better and you use them 90% of the time.
