What the fuck do you think research is faggot? It's not like these things are known beforehand and the industry is aimed towards a very narrow subset of research that only gets a product out, not fundamental research like a lot of academia is. There are many ways to salvage a bad research project in academia (whether it be reducing the scope of the project, moving to an entirely different or something like that). The NSF will still be happy if you can produce something that is research worthy which gives you the researcher a lot of leeway in what you want to do, whether you are at a university, national lab or some other academic institution that allows for this research.
Companies will actively force you to research one thing and one thing alone because their focus isn't acquiring knowledge which may or may not be useful in the future. They want money and they can only get that if you produce the product they want and only that.
It's the same shit as in vidya: companies aren't interested in solutions if they won't create money and will actively stifle anything they perceive as detrimental to that goal.
It's also the same reason why working in industry kinda sucks, despite the higher pay. I like the free-form aspect of research in the same way a lot of early 3D game devs in the 90s or the guys at ATT/Bell Labs did. I don't want to go to all these gay ass meetings to say effectively nothing and do even less just to appease shareholders.
Again, you say I'm underage, but you have the point of view of someone that has zero knowledge of how the real world works when it comes to business. We're not in an era of private innovation in a new field. Most private companies aren't forerunners in any sort of research field anymore, barring the field of AI.

Or better yet stop being retarded and actually learn the material or just flunk out.
