I had a Gensis and always wanted an SNES> I eventually got an SNES and played it almost exclusively for a few years. Now that the dust has settled and I look back on all the games i've replayed the most since then, the Genesis was the better system. it also has a much deeper library of hidden gem soundtracks. SNES has some all time greats but I could list a top 50 for Genesis easy but only maybe a top 15 for SNES.

SNES has... le JRPGs.

I preferred SNES. Some friends had Genesis and it somehow felt dated or limited as the only games I ever see are like Sonic, MK1, and some sports games. Or something obscure and janky based on a tv show.

Combined with the Sega CD and 32X? Genesis easily. Can't beat the tower of power.

I played both side to side this year and came to the conclusion that despite my initial beliefs the Genesis is overall the better console.
Tendie revisionism will tell you otherwise but the SNES controller was dogshit for fighting games and many felt slower than in the Genesis. With an actual CRT, Genesis games look much better and games like SF2 look about the same.
Music on SNES games can be better or worse.

However the Genesis lacks an actual answer to Metroid, Megaman X and Star Fox.
It also got more RPGS but the Genesis had more innovative games.
The Genesis had an overall better library while the SNES had better promotional material.
SNES stronger suit were its RPGS while the Genesis has more action titles.
To be honest looking back Earthbound and Super Mario RPG were never that good while Phantasy Star is a little on the underrated side. Treasure games were fantastic and Sonic is possibly among the weakest first party titles in the library but it beats Alex Kidd.

I think that on an objective level the snes had better hardware and better games. Sega didn't put as much effort into getting a tight catalog of must-have titles; Sonic, Ecco, uhhhh comix zone? (which sucks by the way) and vectorman (which is good by the way) are all I really associate with the genesis nowadays. I was too young to grow up with it but the SNES had an all-star cast and nintendo knew it, and leveraged it. This gap only continued to grow, even with the saturn's victory over the n64 in japan.

For context...
You are a kid in the 90s.
You definitively had SMW which is a killer app while the Genesis included some games but not its definitive titles. If anything I really dislike SMW2 in contrast to SMB3 and World.

If you were lucky, your parents got you the combination of the following: Star Fox / Super Metroid / Street Fighter 2 / Legend of Zelda and some 3rd Party Title but no one had a complete library, not even the rich kids, so you definitively missed out on something.
Almost nobody played Earthbound, Secret of Mana or FF3 back when much less own it.

You had to rely on Blockbuster reason everyone favored Beat'Em Ups and Fighting Games or Platformers because imagine beating an RPG through fucking Blockbuster.

So the SNES seems like a better console because you only needed a few core games.
The Genesis better games came way later or were arcade ports.
Plenty of the Genesis best games were relatively unknown compared to the SNES.

Nowadays we know the Genesis had a killer library if you take a look at the whole but at the time the SNES was good for the same reason the N64 was good. Value and and you only needed a handful of games. The PS took over the market when piracy became more mainstream. Do you prefer your N64 library of 8 games at most? or your PS library of 4 original games and about a drawer of burned CDs?

It was the one advantage Genesis had over SNES, but even with that, clock rate isn't actually a sign of higher speeds. Consumers read "higher number = better" when it was more complicated than that. Still, Sega promoted it as a feature (Intel did the same thing with computers).

I had a full library of SNES games. My older cousin was an obsessive collector and one day he came over with an actual milk crate filled to the top with SNES games and just left it at our house. I was like 3-4 so I didn't know what I had but I would dig through that crate and try to play as many games as I could. I still reverted back to playing Ecco the dolphin on my Genesis most of the time.

>Doesn't the Genesis version have better resolution
Correct, it was made for the system's 320x224 resolution. On SNES they lazily converted to its default 256x224 resolution, which causes the sprites to get squished and reduces the viewing area. A lot of multiplat games where Genny was the lead platform had this issue, another one being Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure.

The Genesis didn't have to be better than the SNES. It only had to beat the NES to get its foot in the door, which it easily did successfully. Not playing by Nintendo's strict publishing ruleset meant it'd naturally pick up exclusive titles their competition would reject. Even when a game appears on both platforms, the Genesis version would wind up with unique features to draw attention away from their SNES counterparts. The system only really lost its footing when it tried staying relevant with the next gen of consoles with gimmicky peripheral attachments.

As someone that was born after the dream cast came out. I've always seen this debate as stupid. You can tell its perpetuated by people nostalgic for the argument itself because the snes was better, no contest.

Super metroid, megaman x, donkey kong country, Earthbound, kirby Super star, Final fantasy 6, a link to the past, chrono trigger, Yoshis island, super castlevania, secret of mana, super Mario world., f-zero, super Mario rpg

The genesis library does not compare, every genesis collection I've ever bought I stopped playing after I beat sonic 3, almost every other genesis game is a low quality beat em up. You know shits bad when people say altered beast is one of the best Genesis games, That game is TRASH

A lot of people do forget how things worked back then(myself included). A beat em up is more appealing to have over the weekend then an rpg or even Zelda. Because you can play them with your brother or friends.

However I think its pretty undeniable the snes had the better library. When people got access to all snes and genesis games for free through emulators, they flocked to the snes. Today the biggest indie releases are spiritual successors to snes games just look at delta rune and silk song
