Trannies used to almost exclusively be perverted old men playing dress-up, just like lesbians used to be fat ugly "butch" dykes. This isn't true anymore because women, especially the young ones, are by far the most vulnerable demographic to any new trends. The reason for this is that women struggle to do anything but self insert, they do not 'control' a character.
This was already hinted at back in the 70s when ttrpg games were emerging.
