I'm neutral on steam but I will never forgive them for ruining tf2 (maybe I'm being pedantic but they did make some genuinely baffling choices with the game)

Some ideas are so obvious that someone will act them out eventually.
From Valve's perspective he made an excellent strategic business decision.
From average normal perspective he made a reasonably solid service.
From proper user perspective Steam is limiting.
It's unlikely that he steals games, as locking out access is closer to racket than theft, and your ownership of an instance of someone else's product is both finite, and form-factor locked anyway. Disks can be lost, data centres can be lost, devs themselves okay it. If you want to an anti-Steam argument you should bring it up with publishers and gamedev.
Money you gave out on your own.
Abandoning franchises is definitely bad. I can only speculate on reasons as to why.

DRM is 50/50, mostly not good, but Steam is not as bad as people make it to be.

Same people also forget that the gaming sphere doesn't exist in a vacuum.
It can expire. It takes some, minor or not, resources to make hard storage.
But more importantly, it exists in a sea of economic sharks.
As it makes money, cutthroat people shall inevitably set up there. Gabe is a trendsetter, but he's also a gatekeeper.

Yeah, gatekeeper of unfair business practices and screwing over the customer.

Artifact poster, is that you?
It can always be worse.
If a bunch of e-thots can milk people en masse, then more capable people certainly can do it better.
>unfair
Business is war, customers aren't always right, and the ins and outs of the object you call "money" are not in your or anyone elses control bar emission apparatus, skilled people and out-of-context extrajudicial entities.
It's silly to complain about unfair business when everything is unfair.

Steam DRM, of-course, no VAC server access in Valve games (but that's a license issue, I don't know how it was in hl1 earliest times), no on-board option to compress game into a licensed ISO to reinstall it at any time, etc.
>steamrip
Neat, but nothing new. Back in 2006-07 there were pirate steam clients, at least on russian forums. You could download a lot of games.
No access to VAC, though.

The nerfs to weapons like the eviction notice just showed me that the people working on tf2 at that point either didn't give a shit or didn't know what made the game originally so good.

But he made a big social media app for gamers, everyone can see my achievements and badges and my epic collection :)
Everyone on there thinks I'm cool and really good at video gaems, you can even add non-Steam games on Steam, it's based!

Fascist? "Evil"? Wew. Realy full of your own all or nothing kool-aid, ain'tcha?
I don't think you understand the scope of this industry, or the people that surround all industries.
Either way Steam never failed me, personally, and one can simply not rely on any particular service, as all external services, systems, etc can fail. Even computer tech itself.

I don't see you bitch about Intel putting backdoors up wazoo since 90s as much as one particular "somebody" bitches about Artifact and Valve like they are the third coming of MMM scam pyramid.

not that guy
i can forgive all the shitty cosmetics in the world because I convinced myself they had no gameplay effect and thus didn't matter
i can forgive all the garbage tie-in weapons because I convinced myself that even though they had gameplay effect, nobody used them so they didn't matter
i can forgive all the garbage shit with killstreaks and looping taunts because even though they changed the way people played the game, i convinced myself it wasn't a big deal

what I can't forgive is the utterly garbage matchmaking that effectively killed community servers. i am now utterly convinced that matchmaking and comp fetishization is what killed gaming.

Gabe Newell is an awful scammer and belongs in federal prison for fraud.

Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.

Burnout mixed with bureaucratic rot. Once the old guard left or got shuffled into VR projects, TF2 became the orphan left in the hallway. They probably threw interns and janitors at the codebase without a clue what made the game tick. Weapon balance became dartboard tier because they were just flipping stats based on Reddit complaints instead of actual gameplay data. It’s like watching someone try to tune a racecar with YouTube comments and a sledgehammer.
