What exactly is "self insertion" in video games?

Is it when you pick a character that feels similar to who you are?

Or is it when you pick a character who you wish you were?

It's when you pick a character you roleplay as and it ends up being the main role you play and the character you see yourself as in a fictional setting. Of course the character isn't really you even if you self insert as, it's a fictional character that's still significantly different from you. (for an example you aren't actually a warrior with a magic elemental sword.)

At the end of the day it's someone you pretend to be and see yourself as in a fictional context and it doesn't determine who you actually are in the real world.

midwit, dimwit, potato, tomato
maybe you're right but I've never seen a self inserter make anything close to a worthwhile post, while a midwit might make one during an eclipse

When the character is mute, so you self-insert whatever the character is thinking.
