i personally think Sonic 06 is very guilty of this for the Sonic series but i wonder what examples you guys have

Tbh, I see what you mean, but Sonic 06 could be largely credited for Sonic's bad rep and the plague of "only classic Sonic is good" meme. So even like 5/10 games like Sonic Unleashed or Sonic Heroes were viewed as crimes when it's like, just not great games? Not terrible either, like how people memed the Werehog as a silly concept as if something silly is out of place in Sonic? And at worst the Werehog stages were just mediocre GOW clone. Like is that really that big of a crime? Again, it's not good, it's just like, the autistic negative attention always seemed weird to me too, if you don't want to play it don't play it.

In-universe, 06 was inconsequential, in real life it's probably the most consequential game that isn't the first one or the soft reboot, not even Generations causing the rest of the franchise to be utterly plagued by nostalgia pandering comes close. 06 is wrong in all the right places.
