Why did Expedition 33 attract so many people who hate and refuse to meaningfully engage with JRPGs? It reminds me a lot of the weird xenophobic late 6th-7th gen journalism in that sense.

Which is funny because the game is clearly inspired by Final Fantasy (That hasn't really had an "anime artstyle" in decades) and developed by french people who clearly love anime stuff

Because it made the turn based gameplay more fun without sacrificing the strategic character building aspect.

Also the locations were generally more succinct and didn't overstay their welcome like most JRPGs. The only spot I got close to sick of was Sirene's Arena because I fucked up the Pelaf battle and had to go through those elevators twice

JRPGs were maligned and had a bad rep, then FF7 came out and they became cool and hip and everyone played a few of them before getting bored or wary with the genre again.
E33 is another of these exception events when a good game hits the hype train just right and everyone enjoys it.

This game is made for brainlets who dont want to think about how to play turn based strategy combat, but want to be told and handheld their way through the entire game with zero difficulty
You get huge flashing notifications pop up every single time something attacks you where you just need to press a single button to take zero damage. Literally just press O once a turn and you win
Its impossible to lose to any opponent because when all you need to do is then press another button to make the enemy take damage every turn without fail

There is no actual gameplay in this, no thought that needs to be put into it. It's just pressing a single button a minute like a monkey when the screen tells you to

Presentation is the vast majority of why people claim to like any given thing and E33 doesn't have "anime" aesthetics to put off people who bounce off those kinds of games for surface level reasons. On a similar note, it also serves as evidence that the addition of blood, swearing and photorealistic humans would be all it takes for Paper Mario to really hit the big leagues.

If it's any demographic that should be rattled about E33, it's Atlus fans. E33 took the turn-based formula and actually made it engaging. If Atlus thinks they can rehash their persona/archetype system for their 6th persona title, they will be in for a rude awakening.
