The big fly is a pain in the ass. But you didn't have to fight him. Just walk away. You can go to another location to increase the strength of your weapon. And/Or collect enough masks to increase your HP. And then come back and fight him stronger.
I'm 39, and while I did find the fight to be a little annoying, I still handled it after like 10-15 attempts. It's not a big deal. Suck it up.

The backtracking is so you cool off between attempts. Reassess what you're doing.
It also doubles as incentive to play better. If you don't want to backtrack, then get good and win.
It triples as a deterrent from throwing yourself mindlessly at the boss. If something is giving you a lot of trouble, it may be beneficial to go explore elsewhere and find the means to become stronger. Or just more experienced. As finding a less difficult enemy to fight can be the stepping stone you need to reach a higher skill level.
It quadruples as a way of getting the player accustomed to the mechanics of the game. As when you desire to get back to the boss quickly, you start to find ways to expedite the trip. Becoming better with each attempt.
It pentuples(?) as a means to grind. By fighting the enemies on the way back to the boss, you gain more resources. Which of course results in a larger purse when you finally beat the boss, and get to keep all of your resources.

I've yet to see anyone mention anything they actually like about this game. It's all just

i like the boss fights and the traversal of the world itself is really fun once you get the grapple ability. i found myself actually getting excited for the hard platforming challenge parts.
the exploration aspect is great, every time i thought i'd found every major area i would find another somewhere. it feels like the game that never ends, in a good way. i still don't know how big the game actually is, i was looking for a flea collectible earlier and ran into yet another new zone i had no idea existed.
what i don't like is the first half of act 1. everything there is total ass, it's like they intentionally frontloaded all the shitty fights and boring parts of the game. for what purpose?

Save the people of Bellhart, and an NPC there will sharpen your needle for free. The boss there is a lot easier than the big Fly. Only took me 3 attempts. If you haven't found bellhart yet, then go left of graymoor. You'll eventually find it.
Or, find all of the flees, and the caravan will escort you to the left side of graymoor, from there, it's only a room away to the left.

Even 1 extra mask will allow you to heal earlier, when it's safer. Not *every* attack does 2 points. Some are 1 points. If you get even 1 extra mask, you can heal with three masks remaining, which is safer than healing with 2 masks remaining.

My issue is that I don't even think its hard. None of the fights really are. Most of their patterns are easy enough to pick up on and read. The issue is that they drag on for so fucking long that I feel my brain turn off and it leads to mistakes because I just want it to be over. Combine that with the slow as fuck movement speed and traversal, and it all just feels so fucking dull after awhile because EVERYTHING takes forever.
My solution was to install a damage multiplier mod and a movement speed mod. Made the game feel less shitty. Doesn't fix the autistic levels of backtracking, but at least I don't feel like a total anemic going from place to place.

Seconding what the other anon said. You could have just held out long enough to get the sprint. It's not that far into the game. It feels so good, and cuts travel time by *a lot*. It's a dash and sprint combined. So it also helps in fights. In fact, when you get it, it tells you to chase enemies down with it.

The fights aren't very long either. You're just not playing offensively enough. Try to sneak in attacks where ever you can. You'd be surprised by how many times you can hit the boss, when you stop playing defensively and take risks.

And like I said, already had it. Game still felt excessively slow. Sorry, but I prefer my 2D action platformers to not feel like shit so I upped the overall movement speed just enough to make it feel better. Ironically this does make pogoing harder since I have to be even more precise, but I'd rather that then feeling like I'm moving through molasses even when utilizing the sprint.
For the damage increase, it just makes it feel better. None of the bosses have complex enough patterns to justify how long they take, even with a fully upgraded nail.
I understand how someone who rarely or never has played an action 2D platformer might find the game okay, but I personally have played far too many, so all I did was make it more in line with what I want from a game, because it was almost there, but it just needed to be overall faster paced.

Also its not a SHMUP brand of autism, its a 2D action platformer brand of autism. I've played so fucking many that I know what I like in them, and Silksong (and Hollow Knight) both are barely passable at best.

I think I may be done with it.
I 100% Hollow Knight back when it came out and it probably was my favorite game that year.
But I've been going through Act 2 in Silksong and I just feel too tired to care, so I closed the game and I'm not sure I'll open it again.
I'm not a demented masochist, I don't need a whole game to be HK's path of pain on steroids.
It also doesn't help that every reward sucks, you go through some platforming hellscape, kill some damage sponge boss with 10 flying adds and your reward is some pointless trinket and maybe a few anal beads if you are lucky.

Lmao I'd rather replay Metroid Fusion over playing this hunk of shit, and fusion is probably the worst 2D Metroid game due to its linear nature. At least I can finish Fusion in 2-3 hours even when going for 100%. Believe it or not, Metroidvanias are better when they don't take forever to finish.
