A lot of the design philosophy in this game feels like Dark Souls 1 vs 2. There seems to be a complete misunderstanding of what made the original HK, and the wrong aspects were amplified. Things like excessive platforming, everything doing 2 damage (including environment), 90% of the mask fragments being locked behind the last 20% of the game, and even egregious shit like putting a hard boss at the end of a platforming gauntlet, putting flying projectile enemies in platforming gauntlets, or the retarded bench traps

The problem with DS2 was that they fucked the most basic shit like combat and movement, not that it was hard.

This is not true. This is only something we start seeing in the later games.
2 is still following the DeS-DaS1 design where paying close attention to the environment, exploiting weaknesses will give you the upper hand to overcome an interesting challenge, enemy, piece of level etc.
The hard thing was just a marketing thing they used to sell more copies, they started it after 1 released and used it for the DLC.

This is absolutely not true. DS2 is chock full of Sen's Fortress tier gotchas, the sequels don't. DS2 is chock full of dogshit areas (like Shrine of Amana) and gank squads. DS3 and ER actually had an understanding of intricate level design and difficulty through design rather than numbers/surprise alone.

when I first played ER and explored the imp crypts, where every enemy is waiting behind a corner to get a drop on you, I got serious DS2 flashbacks.

Catacombs are arguably the worst part of ER, and this is one of the main reasons. Another is also analogous to DS2: samey looking bland corridors with shitty texture.

Wrong. They very obviously knew exactly what made Hollow Knight good, but then deliberately fucked with those elements to mess with people. They took their experience designing a near-perfect video game and used it to design a near-perfect torture device for people who enjoyed that game, and that's fucking hilarious.
