Why the fuck do old people love pinball so much?
I want to go to an arcade and play some actual games but arcades in the US are like 70% pinball.

pinballs fun, there's a physical element that you simply cant get with purely digital games.
you also have to put it into context, these were big in the 70s when everyone was on quaaludes and coke and so booting up a pinball machine with all the lights flashing and objects moving around and sound effects all happening in relation to your action, of course u would like it.

Back then the pinball machines spat out money if you won. Whitey Bulger, for example, made a ton of money off of pinball gambling until the city of Boston banned pinball machines.

Pinball is a unique experience you can never truly replicate at home.
The game also has significantly more depth to it than you'd think at a glance since most casuals just kind of hammer the ball as much as they can.
Every machine plays differently in its objectives and the types of shots and playstyle that work for it.
Once you learn the basics of pinball controls you begin to understand this and the game really opens up because you learn to control your shots and then you learn to place your shots and now you can choose which objectives and modes to do in what order you like and some machines are just like vidya where you have to beat every objective to get to the final hardest one before you can beat the game.
My favorite example of this is on my favorite machine Lord of the Rings Pinball, the hardest goal is to reach Valinor and it requires beating all 6 modes priotizing only required objectives instead of score as you'd traditionally do in pinball. and reaching the end is incredibly difficult due to the sheer number of accurate shots required, it takes over an hour to accomplish.

Back when it was in production it cost $8,000 for the standard edition while the limited edition, smaug gold edition, and black arrow edition sold for $8,500(the only differences are purely cosmetic). I actually got the black arrow one for $8,000 because it was the only version my local vendor had in stock and I specifically wanted just the standard model.

That pretty much applies to most manufacturers these days. The only really good designer atm is Keith Elwin, and Stern better hope he doesn't bail on them.

I kinda miss the pinball crossover game craze, or even original pinball games that were pretty rad. It and Breakout made for some really cool, simple fun games.

I recalled The Simpsons Wizard mode also being rather BS in activation as well with successful runs being well over an hour each.
Most of my claim to fame is like triggering Wizard in Bride of Pinbot, High Roller Casino, and Black Knight 2000. Not directly difficult games to trigger in earnest (Bride is just the same shot like 5 times in succession, HRC is just a little luck but there's 3 things you can do to auto win events or bypass them outright so it's not that hard, and BK2000 can be set up for a later game to trigger it instantly.).
Still, do love me some pinball. Stern Pinball Arcade on Switch is -nice- as a "On the go/in bed" kinda take, and Pinball FX 'works', but nether feels as good as a real table is going to.

LotR and Simpsons Pinball Party were designed by the same guy, and both have some of the deepest rulesets in the industry. He also did the rules for JJP's The Hobbit, and that also has a very deep ruleset that does a lot of creative things with its arguably sparse layout.

The tables themselves are really wide and just feel awkward and cheap. Every single one feels like its designed for "stop and pop" single shots to advance whatever mode you are trying to play. Besides that, all the theming feels incredibly soulless being little more than cheapo movie tie-ins. Look at classics like Medieval Madness and hear how much humor and creativity there is in all the call outs.

I guess since the customer base is now private people instead of businesses they make the tables less busy to make balls last longer but they can lose the speedy feel maybe?
Agreed on the themes just a bunch of crap but I heard pokemon, sonic and transformers G1 are coming soon

Wizard of OZ at least fit and the upper playing field worked well enough. Yet I'll admit since then the others have interested me less and less, though I had to do a double take on the recent Jaws and Foo Fighters from Stern wondering if they where taking notes from them or not. More on that 'Stop and Pop' then anything else.
