Corporations exist to earn profit for the top shateholders (or a singluar owner, but that's rare nowadays). Why fund a team to "fix" a game done and old? That costs more than potential profits. The brand, at this point, does not project profits which would excuse the use of corporate workforce in order to do anything more with it than was done already. Valve still isn't as bad as Asian (China, Korea, Japan) corporations that shut down their multiplayer servers the moment projected profits for the year become lower than potential expsenses. Just pulling the plug and that's all folks, but don't worry, here's some upcoming, new (multiple of them) formulaic titles with even more predatory mechanisms all carefully tailored to milk you for as long as possible and then shut the thing down on you.
Meanwhile, Valve still keeps alive games like TF2 - yea, I know, micro transactions, but as far as I know, none of them allow you to get ahead of other players even if you only started.
