Honestly, why is that a problem? Is he not allowed to love playing RTS games like that?
I can relate actually, that's the only way I could ever have fun with RTS games, play against the AI in skirmishes, like in Warcraft 2, all the different Command and Conquer and Red Alert games, etc.
In actual multiplayer they turn into rushing some who can click through some autistic build order that you have no choice about because if you don't do it, you have already lost. Sorry but never had any interest in that, this part is not fun at all.

why you calling me out OP?
RTS is not dead, it just evolved down a suboptimal path through corporate meddling. It was never at its best as a competitive Esports genre dominated by sweats (fuck you SC2, fuck you nu-Blizz). It was intended to be a genre focused on FUN foremost. Not who can perfect their build orders. Not who can break the 200 APM barrier.
Red Alert games: great campaigns, success
WC3: great campaign, success
TFT: great campaign, success
AOE2: great campaign, success
Conquerors: great campaign, success
AOE3: shitty campaign, failed
AOE3 expacs: even shittier campaigns, failed
SC2: mediocre campaign, success despite Blizz's worst efforts
What more evidence do you need? Indie RTS with nonexistent competitive playerbases? Do we need to bring in grand strategy as a demonstration of the gigantic singleplayer strategy playerbase compared to multiplayer? All multiplayer does is allow the worst of the worst (sweats) to interact with a community primarily in it for FUN on their own terms. This never leads to positive results. Tee bee aitch, RTS shouldn't even have multiplayer, because it diverts company resources away from quality campaigns and playtesting. This is how you get dogwater like Stormgate.

Aoe4 had good campaigns but not enough of them, was successful too. I think good single player content is the best way for people to enter the online scene. All these new RTS games lack this.

I mean grand strategies are kind of just an example that the genre of "RTS" specialized into sub genres that accentuated the competing aspects.
Even borderline unrecognizable games like factorio are an example of this, I think. ARPGs in a very strange way are a sort of cousin that cannibalized some of what RTS used to cater to. Dota clones clearly. Grand strategy games. 4x games. City builders. Real time tactics. I think these all have a common ancestry. The formula that is "real time strategy" defined as being strategy, in real time, but NOT one of the above, is quite narrow and I don't think there's much left within that niche to explore. Supreme commander perfected what that niche means to me, age of empires 2 I think lives and dies on its aesthetics and its perfected that niche for sure.

I think the problem is that it's like fighting games
Lots of people like the single player aspect of fighting games and enjoying them with friends
But online only fags are what killed it. There's definitely a place in pretty much all hobies for people on both ends of the spectrum. It's like someone wanting to learn to draw vs someone who does it as a serious hobby. Or the person who likes doing camping on a weekend by driving to the campsite with their vs the survivalist larper who goes naked into the woods and looks for a rock sharp enough to use as a knife

Rts is dead because every single one of them are hardcore pvpslop, solo play is always a after thought in these kind of games

I'm too dumb for competitive-tier play
All I play RTS games for is to watch my little dudes do things like cut trees and build stuff

this isn't a strawman, visit /vst/ or any bigger RTS thread. Full of shitters who unironically want to just play puzzle games they call "campaigns".

honestly some AoE2 campaigns on hard can be really fucking fun. I recently beat the Sicilians campaign and that last mission where you either have to wipe or bribe all your enemies or build a wonder and you're basically getting ganked on land and sea from all sides within 2 minutes was kino. not even savescumming can save you because the AI is not scripted and you have to play/build optimally from the beginning
are the campaigns in aoe2 DE better than in the OG and the conquerors?
i tried the william wallace campaign but dropped it immediately when i saw they changed the voice lines

Some scenarios were buffed, others nerfed, others completely remade like The Forgotten. Overall, they are better because the AI is better in DE.

This doesn't answer your question, but you should download the mods that restore the OG cutscenes and voice acting.

>I WANT TO PLAY RTS, THEY WERE MY FAVORITE GENRE!
>Nice, my dude. I fucking love RTS. I used to play AoE2 4v4 in LAN with friends all the time. Standard, quickstart, Deathmatch Post Imperial, whacky mods, you name them.
>I love strategy. I love Starcraft's pacing even though I'm not that fast. I love SupCom design. I fucking love every AoE, every Relic game, even gave DoW3 a chance, too bad it wasn't what we expected.
>Deserts of Kharak? i'm up to it
>Come on bro, why you shy?
>You like Campaign modes? I can point you into some awesome ones if you like, it's a great way to learn the MP
>Nah, man, don't be shy, everyone starts slow. It doesn't matter if you lose your first matches, whats important is that you learn and have fun doing so
>Ladder anxiety is real, no denying it. Can you imagine? I still got that feeling too sometimes! but it's part of growing up. It's a game, a training of mind and soul. The real enemy is within, not the other player, he's just testing himself too. So give it all you've got!
>Cities Skylines is cool, but that's not an RTS, senpai.
>Actually, yes, I have a copy of The Art of War right here. It's incredible how it actually can be applied to any vidya too. I can lend it to you if you like.
>Yes, see, I'll teach you the pacing and why build orders are important, but mostly to think like your enemy and be 2 steps ahead.
>Never give up! I won so many games with pincer attacks or guerrilla warfare behind the enemy production, outnumbered and outclassed. Scouting is vital! You see, you might have foresight, but it's better to actually have true sight
>Pushes, defenses, turtling, rushes, eco, micro, macro, cheeky infiltrations, offensive maneuvers, defensive tactics, tech domination, they're all valid, as long as you try your best
>Wanna hit me up at AoE4? I play RUS right now, eco boom is interesting
>Let's smash some bots in BAR next!
>Next we hit the gym and then some work. Healthy body and a healthy mind!
