To tell you the truth, this series has horrible boss fights. I can count the good ones in one hand— Quiet, The Boss, The End, Psycho Mantis, but more than not there’s dogshit fights like against the Metal Gears, Raging Raven, The Fury, Sniper Wolf…

What gives? Is it the generally clunky gameplay of the series? It would be better if the series had less boss fights

Metal Gear bosses are 20% gameplay 80% presentation and that's why Gray Fox and Ocelot in MGS1 are such iconic bosses

How could I be filtered if I beat them? These games are at their best when you’re sneaking and using CQC. Even better when you’re against a boss which promotes sneaking and using CQC instead of a mindless gun battle to bring down their HP/Stamina

I'm not gonna lie, I unironically fell for otacon calling me to follow him with the mk2 during the octopus fight and I walked into a claymore.

Laughing Octopus is the only good one. Raging Raven is pretty bad. I’m still playing through 4, so hopefully this all improves

Pretty much. The gameplay got really good and fluid only in 5.

The boss fights tend to be memorable and deliver on the spectacle, what they lack in mechanical depth they often make up for with some unique gimmick. Souls games could unironically learn a thing or two.

>good ones - Psycho Mantis
psycho mantis is a dogshit boss actually
it's just "switch controller slot" wow, after that its just shoot him
maybe mind blowing as a tech illiterate kid at the time but now/replaying? One of the weakest bosses in the series

Metal Gear having tons of boss fights is what makes it stick out from the crowd. Classic vidya design is good no matter what. And no most of them are good. Fatman, Harrier, Vamp, MG Ray, The End, The Fury, Volgin, The Boss, Laughing Octopus, Crying Wolf, and Sahelanthtopus in particular are all fantastic.

Boss fights are low points because devs feel like games NEED bosses because that’s how it’s always been. Most of the Most MGS bosses are generic “shoot till it dies” anyways. Gimmick bosses are genuine good design

The Fury is great, it's basically the only fight in MGS3 you can't cheese

And it's true, they do need them
It's part of the reason you're playing Metal Gear instead of Splinter Cell.
Splinter Cell games are infinitely more forgettable because they lack boss fights. And no, that doesn't mean they're designed better or anything, they still have forced shootouts. It's just the combat sections have no personality to them

in MGS3 alone we've got loads of great bosses
>Ocelot
>The Pain
>The Fear
>The End
>The Boss
And while not top tier I am a fan of the Ocelot Unit, The Fury and Volgin 1. I don't even like 4 that much but the only stinker of a boss is the one beast girl who flies around a bunch, I forget which one that was.

Normalfags got filtered by the BB Unit because they don’t understand the idea of the PMC being a bunch of women in fetish gear.

Too many have a gimmick that allows you to cheese them, which aren't hard to figure out.
Doesn't help that most of these bosses have you playing in the complete opposite way you normally do, instead of being a way to test your skill.

doesn't help that they aren't very well integrated plot wise, with Drebin just loredumping you their info over the codec. The Cobra unit also wasn't very integrated into the plot but they had the rule of cool on their side, the BB unit while mechanically enjoyable kind of looked stupid and always came with a tedious loredump.

I dunno I think this is assuming you're doing a no alert run/tranq only run, if you roll with your mistakes and make use the larger arsenals at your disposal to actually fight guards the combat loop is very similar. European extreme is an optional challenge mode after all, not the main game

Cobra unit made sense even if you aren't paying attention to the lore because obviously THE boss would have a crazy ass battalion
BB is just sexy ladies blocking your way because sexy ladies awooga (not complaining)

he's quite fun if you actually hold him up for the camo. he's really boring otherwise because you just thermal goggle headshot him until he flops over

I always kill him early just to do the Ocelot Unit instead.
