I don't think the issue is whether it's hard to avoid or not.
It's all about artist preference and I personally think it always suits RPG and their grand stories.

Leitmotifs wouldn't suit a hectic level based game without any real cohesion. OP should have complained about that instead.
Like imagine the same melody being repeated throughout different stages in a difficult shmup. It would get very annoying very quickly because half the appeal of accomplishing the feat of reaching a new stage is that change in music scenery.

Soundtracks are supposed to align events of the story and gameplay.
Tying melodies to certain characters or events gets the player to associate that melody with an emotion, and when you bring that melody back in an unexpected place, you can get a strong reaction from the player.

I like how Twilight Princess does it, associating that little trumpet melody with good feeling of free riding through Hyrule Fields and then re-uses it when you turn the tables on a boss, and thus beating the shit out of a boss always feels better than usual in this game compared to other Zeldas.

Honestly, Toby really should've toned down the leitmotif spamming in the latest Chapters. "Raise Up Your Bat" would've been cool if it was a completely original song, but it loses a lot of its impact when you realize it's literally just "Don't Forget" + "Lost Girl" blended and turned into generic rock.
