What happened? What's with the complete sloppification of servers in modern Garry's Mod?
Used to, you could join a DarkRP server and there would actually be people roleplaying. Nowadays, you join a 100-player DarkRP server and everyone is AFK in their base printing money, gambling on in-game CS:GO cases, or using their special donor job they paid for to RDM people and get away with it.
Don't even get me started on TTT, where there's a 90% chance if I join a server they all have the same looter shooter RNG weapons system addon installed.
The Flood? Sledbuild? GMod Tower? All dead and gone.

It's been dead for almost 10 years. I'd say the golden years were around 2013-2015.

that being said, not a day goes by that I don't miss DarkRP. There's such a massive void of social sandbox games.

Gmod hasn't continuously reinvented itself like Roblox has. These are not the same game.

Everyone owns it so there's genuinely just an eternal waiting game of someone to innovate and make something that you reinstall it for
There ARE cool gamemodes for friends - Flood is honestly decent with a small group and Jazztronauts is really fun
Roleplay tends to be the last bastion of pure creativity even if sometimes it's ruined by younger folks or people who fly way too close to the sun
The only thing that really keeps me perma-interested in gmod is that every single time you're on the verge of retiring you see some random dude in a server go 'yeah i've been working on this with friends for a few years' and it looks like something that ISN'T gmod. You go, 'That can't be garrysmod', but it is.
I always try to keep an eye out for those and short-run servers that people do for fun yearly because they're where it's at now comparative to longform DarkRP, which lost its lustre since gmod isn't a heavily-trafficked game by randoms anymore. No more meeting potheads making bases next to children basing next to homeless people with 1500 hours spent just building.
Maybe it'll revive someday with Gmod 2 via S&Box but I think the one thing people are really waiting for are city-sized roleplay servers. DarkRP can totally make a resurgence but it requires being not retarded, which is a hard line to toe.
For now, it's all just about waiting for Begotten: Prelude. Classic fucking gamemode.

also, having constraints is objectively a good thing, no matter how much people will disagree. the constraints of the source engine spawned so many creative ideas.

it’s a fucking sandbox. as in, make your own fun or constructively add to someone else’s fun. other players do not exist to be your randomly generated personal entertainment. want to have fun in darkrp? I’ll tell you how to have fun in darkrp:

1) scout the map out. what doors are available? what SPEAKS to you as a potential build site? it should be close to foot traffic, but not too accessible to repeated raids from pd/faggots
2) form concept. huffing gasoline beneath a sewer grate? interdimensional cult? it should be something that attracts randos and encourages their own unique engagement.
3) build it. this is the long tedious part, some faggot is gonna roll by and kill you. suck it up, the payout is worth it.
4) do it. do the thing you want others to do with the space you’ve created. huffing gas in the sewers? maybe get some cheap pistols and body tap surface dwellers just to piss them off. remember: your mic is your most valuable tool.
5) build a following. people are doing the thing. keep loosely coordinating them, but never be too forceful. create an atmosphere of collaboration based on the original concept.
6) prepare for the end. eventually, you’ll attract enough attention to be the target of a decisive raid. this is a good thing. a critical mass of autism from which nothing escapes. all shall perish in a maelstrom of gunfire and screeching. the natural end of any good base, be proud.
