Naoto’s whole struggle is that people dismiss them because of their gender, so they suppress their femininity entirely. People say “it’s not trans, it’s just social pressure,” but that’s literally part of many trans people’s experience.
Of course Atlus never outright said it—2007 Japan + Hashino meant zero chance of an openly trans character. But their arc still hit home for a lot of trans players.
Whether canon spells it out or not doesn’t matter. Naoto is trans-coded, and that’s why they resonate.
