I don't think they have actually strayed from the original ideas much to make the world more comfy. The characters still have adult consequences to their actions (ending up in jail, etc.), and the world is still very low population for the size. Probably because it is hard to farm in a world full of monsters, so the cities have a very low carrying capacity. You don't see the characters filing their taxes because it's boring, but I don't think much of the original was changed aside from losing the mid 90s Japanese bubble pop pessimism of the original.
It's still a story where people are going on an adventure as soon as they are mature enough to survive on their own, everyone wants to be a pokemon trainer, the world is vast and unpopulated and a little dangerous.
I don't think they ever really lost the vibe or even the rules of the world of the original, they just don't talk about tax policy very often.
