In what direction do you even go in for the next Xenoblade or whatever it is they're working on to make it something that feels and looks vastly different than previous games?

I'd be stumped, but then again im not a game designer

They should team up with Square Enix and do Xenogears properly this time, with Disc 2 as an actual game. If it plays like Xenoblade it should work perfectly fine I believe.

Being that 3 was massively critically panned and probably sold poorly too, they’d have to go back to the drawing board. I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo cut Monolith off due to how poorly-received 3 was.

The other games use very extreme dynamic res so they're quite blurry on handheld. 3 has FSR which makes it not quite as blurry but still not ideal.

Xenoblade 3 is their most polished game but also Monolith Soft's weakest game from a setting and story POV.

I want to mention, XB3 released in a weird covid window in 2021 with only about 6 months after initial announcement and very little advertising
as a game; it doesnt balance "being it's own installment" and "celebrating a mix of 1 and 2's worlds/characters/ideas" very well. These are both really cool and very Takahashi-based ideas, take all the characters you love and "fuse" or "twist" them in a new realm is fun, but new players get left behind.
The actual independent content and story of 3 has glaring problems, Saturday Weekly Cartoon Villains, and lack of focus. It also has my personal favorite narrative sequence in Xenoblade being Ch5 into Ch6, so I really like standing up for 3. The cast is good, it might beat out xb2's cast due to the core 6 being fairly well written, the worst criticisms are Noah and Mio being a bit too generic but I was still happy with them.
xb3 gets shit on this board like nonstop, I love all 3 games, even 1 which if you haven't replayed after 2023 it has aged meh, xb2 blushy crushy is WAY worse but also Jin and Malos are top tier xenokino. I love xeno stop the brother wars.

Yeah im really bored of the same boy-meets-girl story they've been riffing on ever since the first game. Shulk/Fiora, Rex/Pyra, Noah/Mio. X did things a bit different which I liked, and Xenosaga did the romance thing in a much more interesting way too with the Shion/Allen/Kevin thing. Felt more multifaceted and didn't feel like the story completely centered around it or felt like the main driver either.

I'm bored of the whole Klaus shit too. Just feels like the Aldi version of what was already done in Xenosaga.

Takahashi doesn't even write these characters, they're mostly all written and created by his band of anime writers and feel created just out the sake to have characters cause there's a plot needed cause it's a product. These aren't character that Takahashi every night wrestles with himself over NEEDING to write. His biggest passion isn't that he just NEEDED to make a character like Nia or Melia or Reyn or whatever. They,'re nothing characters who are created solely to move the story along.

Xenoblade is shit honestly. It's just a new set of characters each game which Monolith Soft stop caring about when they start their next project anyway.

It feels hack-y, but it can't be more hack-y than the Xenoblade multiverse link that didn't need to happen, and it provides some means of the Ghost not being completely unstoppable and curbstomping the shit out of BLADE, should main characters find themselves consumed by the void.

I liked 3 but it left almost zero impression on me unlike 1 and ESPECIALLY unlike 2. Flawed games all, but 3 just feels so much more lackluster. The setting is criminally underused despite being full of potential, and pretty much the only standout portions are the beginning and the Noah/Mio stuff in Ch.5/6 where the game peaks absurdly high but then just limps it's way to the end afterwards.

Versus was the codename for Final Fantasy 15 which Nomura originally created to be the total opposite of FF13 gameplay wise and to an extent story wise. It was originally called Versus 13 as Motomu Toriyama's pitch was less dark and complicated in both areas making it more suitable for a modern entry. Could be. It's possible to sell a mechanically complex game if its systems work intuitively and are well explained and tutorialized. But I don't really feel like the xeno games have been meeting that bar. The introduction of basic action mechanics could have equivalent depth to all these MMO systems (or more if we're talking in terms of execution skill), but in a way that's significantly easier to intuitively understand.

The biggest drawbacks of more actiony combat would probably be
1) fewer distinct enemies and characters, as it takes more work to make good hitboxes/hurtboxes that feel fair and aren't jank
2) level design might need to be adjusted a bit. Currently they can basically put enemies anywhere regardless of vertical impediments or arena size, but that's harder when enemies and player characters actually need to connect with each other and you need room to dodge shit.

While I think the story is a bit more middling, the character writing is still pretty solid, and I think Noah and Mio are actually in the lower half of the party in terms of interesting characters.
Taion is a standout character because he's a distrustful ass at the beginning, he takes the longest of everyone to let down his guard. The friction he has with the Keves characters, especially Lanz, leads to his moments of character growth being all the more meaningful.
Speaking of Lanz, he's the meathead buddy of the group, but he's not treated as the retard monkey butt of the joke every scene (*cough*Persona series*cough*). Even though he butts heads with Taion early on, he's dependable and quickly sets aside his pride and adapts, willing to listen to Taion's strategies before Taion even realizes. He has no friction with Sena, they just vibe together without any stress or drama which is refreshing to see compared to the other pairs.
Eunie is also pretty good, she's in the top, probably better than Lanz. I like that she's got a mouth on her, she just has a strong personality overall, and I think her history and trauma with D are done really well. The moment she finds the dog tag on an old husk from a battle long ago and realizing said husk is her own is a really memorable scene. Especially how she tries to keep it to herself but Taion is able to see her memories and get an idea of what she's feeling even if he doesn't understand exactly what's going on.

Enough has been said about Noah, Mio, and Sena. The most interesting thing about Noah and Mio is their recurring destiny couple bit. I like how Noah has a subtle chuuni naming scheme for things, and I like when Mio actually loses her cool on him that one night. But they're kind of plain and boring otherwise. Sena is cute but she's the most extra of the characters. People have already mentioned that she's overshadowed in her own side stories.

Its alright, nothing ground breaking. Episode 1 is a bit rough both story and gameplay but still ok. Episode 2 kind of fucked up the gameplay and art style but the story peaked here. Episode 3 improved the gameplay a lot and a decent conclusion to the story. All in all, a pretty decent experience if you can push past episode 1 and 2. They're more finished games than Gears. If you enjoy space themed stuff, then its is a must play. Episode 1 especially really captures the emptiness feeling of space.

Be prepared as these games are known for having lots of long and frequent cutscenes(Not as bad as today's games surprisingly). Also only play the uncensored undub.

I'm very late to this thread but 3 is a good game. I do have lots of issues with it but it's better than 1 in almost every regard, which had the entire mechonis section that seemingly goes on forever and is a huge letdown. I've played 1 so many times and want to drop it by the mechonis. Replaying 3 is more enjoyable than 1 because it's a fun game to play and more consistent all around. The soundtrack is much more nuanced and in depth. I actually think it has the best soundtrack, albeit there isn't an iconic song. But every song is really really good. I don't think 3 is the best xenoblade game but it's not the worst and it's pretty great to replay

I'm one of those retards who bought the entire xenoblade cd box set from Japan for hundreds of dollars. I like the soundtrack for 1 but I do skip lots of tracks. A soundtrack is much more than the memorable songs. The soundtrack for 1 sort of relies on you having played the game. I can put on the entirety of the 3 soundtrack and not skip anything. It's really nuanced and good enough that someone who has no association or knowledge of the game can enjoy.

So? You're judging the music segregated from the game experience. Following that, Xenosaga ep.1 has some of the best songs in the series. The fact remains the music sucks ass when playing ep.1 because certain tracks only play at certain times, sometimes only once, and you can completely miss some tracks entirely, a lot of which being some of the better tracks. That diminishes the experience of playing Xenosaga ep.1. That also applies to xc3. Don't forget that the context in which you hear a song greatly influences how much you enjoy or dislike it. There's a strong element of subjectivity involved. If someone dislikes the game, they aren't going to like listening to music that they associate with negative experiences.
