It's good in general but especially in ranked runs because you care about leveling your characters. Leen can inherit the knight ring or other valuables, plus she can easily clear the arena with the sleep sword. Corple levels up fast thanks to paragon staffspam and nothing else matters.
Leaving Sylvia unpaired is also a very good option.

Plenty of normal people play mobile games, especially in younger generations, but you wouldnt know because theyre not acting like you would expect, so you dont realize it. Its becoming a more normal thing in society to the point that even boomer celebs are being used for ads to advertise mobile games. My 84 year old grandma plays a few on her tablet, and I wouldnt call her "off" beyond normal things that come with getting a bit old.

I can concede that gacha tends to attract a certain crowd of crazies because of how they are designed.
Gacha is a bit of a different beast as a lot of them tend sell sex appeal in some way, and the few ive played had a self insert character. These combined seem to sell a fantasy to people with problems so they flock to it more than other things.
This being said, more normal people play gacha games too, and also get their money suckered away from them. Anecdotal, but the latest horse gacha was something my friends all talked about a few times as it was coming out and they tried it. I dont think any stayed with it, but it just goes to show the reach gacha/mobile games have nowadays.

The thing is that those games probably cost a fraction of the budget Engage did. They were not voiced at all, and not very complex.
Not saying Engage put any pressure on IS after release, it was probably all paid for in advance. But there's a difference between unvoiced games with a two-year turnaround time and asses reuse, versus a game that took 6+ years and blew its budget on voice actors.

I honestly think Engage was well budgeted. That and Houses were being dev almost simultaneously and even though Engage was considered the bigger project, its 3 Houses the one they decided to implement full voice acting into. Like even minor npcs and minor monastery dialogue was voiced. Considering they likely had no idea how big 3H was going to be, I its fair to say that Engage having no full voice acting means they actually didnt throw the kitchen sink at it and they budgeted accordingly.
We dont know what was the actual sales goal for it before 3H blew up but I doubt it was actually close to 4m. So I doubt Engage lost them money.
To the very least we have a record that the GC/Wii/DS eras were bad enough that the series was in Jeopardy. Jury is still out on Engage but people acting like this is close to the GC/Wii/DS eras are overreacting.
