What game is this screenshot from anyway?
I don't mean Vice City, obviously it's supposed to be Vice City but it looks like someone remade it in a city builder or something.

The designers were masters of making the map seem bigger than it really is through the power of map design and biomes.

On the other hand San Fierro was kinda ass and inconsequential.

San Fierro was underutilised, that's why it's ass. It's quite literally a flyover location. You're there for such a brief period of time before moving on. A filler location if you will. All I remember about it are the Chinese guy, the terrible driving school missions and the even more terrible RC car missions.

I was including Badlands as part of Fierro. It's too short to separate as a different part. Just like people include Toreno missions as part of Venturas.
Anonymous No.720284537 [Report]
>>720283239 (OP)
Maybe but it made it easier to memorize it and by the end of the game you could go reach whatever destination you needed to be at from any point without the need of the GPS marker. That's something that was really cool and made the game feel more like a real city for me rather than a video game level.
Anonymous No.720284553 [Report]

>underutilised
There are more missions in Fierro than desert and venturas combined. And only one less mission than santos(not counting the return, obviously).

I loved that map so much. I didn't like the soundtrack as much as Vice City, and the story was schizo nonsense that jumped from gang war to conspiracy shit to a road trip to gang war again, but the game was 15/10.
I think I'll play it again as my next game.

Also, there's nothing worse than return to Los Santos in that game. Almost all cutscenes consist of Sweet bitching and moaning, capturing the same territories for a second time, riot.
Anonymous No.720285187 [Report]
>>720284914
Even worse, even if you go by his logic that you need to handle your own business: CJ was doing it! He was single handedly dismantling the entire drug network that was supplying the Ballas rather than doing the gang-banging shit that Sweet wanted where you confront the ballas directly in pointless violence. He was going up the chain of command, even eliminating that turncoat Ryder before going up against the last one: Big Smoke.

Fuck you sweet you bitching ass nigga.

The huge mountains make it looks bigger that it is, but yeah, it's not very big. The only way to do real high speed racing is to follow the road that circumnavigate the entire island. It's masterful in appearing big but being relatively tiny.

>Find a little roadside town in the middle of nowhere with property
>Spend a couple of days there just chilling, maybe doing some taxt missions, but mostly just
driving around in the rain listening to I love a rainy night with the Thunderstorm cheat on for maximum comfy
>After a long day, come back home and go live in your comfy little house in the middle of nowhere
>You don't even have to engage with any of this and it doesn't get you anything, its just there if you want to

These always felt like they existed on the outskirts of the game itself - like a little oasis disconnected from the rest of the game where you could do whatever you felt like

There's the implication that Los Santos was a peninsula and that a massive tsunami flooded the place and cut it from the mainland.

I always loved doing this myself. The cities were okay, but the best part was always exploring the wilderness and countryside.
I once managed to derail the train and get the various carriages flung into that lake near that small town to the north of Los Santos. That was neat.

>Pack game with a bunch of half finished gameplay features
>They actually mostly work well
>Make a goofy story that starts with gangbanging in your local neighborhood and ends with you stealing jetpacks from govt bases and doing casino heists
>It actually works and is kino and the characters are some of the best in the series
>Crunch three cities, a desert, a mountain, the countryside and whatever Bayside is into what in hindsight is a small map
>It still feels massive and like a real adventure
>Add in some fairly middling to ugly graphics for the time due to the sheer amount of content
>It still looks better than the definitive edition
>Throw in the usual kino GTA radio stations
>Packed with cute little features like shop shutters closing at night
>A slew of iconic glitches (Ghost world etc)
>Packed with myths and legends (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ue2Xmei2iQ)

Yeah, all cars have massive amounts of drag and surprisingly lame top speeds, the game just abuses FOV and camera effects to make it feel like you're still accelerating to a much higher top speed than you really are.

Do you think having a glove trotting adventure is the key to a memorable open world? Spend X time on Area 1, get forced by story reasons to more to Area 2, spend time there, repeat and then return back to Area 1 to close the circle.
