What's the best vidya train level?

Why do we associate trains with kino when it's pretty much a linear cramped space with nothing interesting going on?

It's like all iconic heist locations are really fucking cool but actually suck in terms of gameplay and what you can do with them, same with bank robberies which are like the part that you look forward to for an entire GTA game, but in execution it's really a nothingburger that's 90% a getaway chase or whatever.

PT's train mission is really short but so good. An underappreciated game is Marc Ecko's Getting Up, the train levels on that are pretty cool.

Dishonored DotO had a great bank level. Chaos Theory too.

That's exactly what makes them interesting anon

Nope

pandora tomorrow really stretched the believability of the ninja thing to ridiculous levels to the point where it just broke any sense of suspending your disbelief, like that airport level where you're fucking sneaking around the waiting hall chairs around tourists during, trying to find little pools of shadows in a fully lit and open place during the day like it's a mega64 sketch.

Perfect Darkness stealth is in general a videogamey arcade abstraction, one that many stealth games like Styx and Dishonored avoided

I should have specified that they're really good when infiltrating them and approaching them quietly, the bank in ct is indeed the goat. But I regularly fantasize about having a heist game where you go more 'loud' but there's a reason there aren't any great ones, and the one that are popular focus on the shooting a million cops part or the stuff after. The actual planning and getting in isn't ever made to be that involved, and I imagine it's the case because it's really hard to come up with gameplay that feels in depth. As it is, it's pretty much just limited to that one cool memorable level where you do it in a largely scripted sequence and it goes by very fast, but then the devs have the wisdom not to put any more of it in the game, because if you did you'd quickly find that there isn't much to it and it would outstay its welcome.

Didn't know DotO had a bank level, makes me want to play it despite it supposedly ruining the lore, I imagine it's going to play like a nod to the metal age trust bank level.

I really want a realistic Splinter Cell adoption or reboot where it's Sam doing low vis surveillance work and wire tapping in like downtown Baghdad instead breaking into some high rise skyscraper in the middle of a highly populated city

I don't mind if for the most part, but the scenario/level selection is very imortant for it to work. In Thief they have a really dark gothic world where the style of the art and the world just lends itself to many environments with dark patches, it's the same trick they use for something like Batman the animated series which has a very stylized almost fantastical world, which is closer replicated in the new batman film and on the other side of the spectrum you have Christian Bale bats standing in his costume in fully lit generic business offices. In the very same series, splinter cell mostly does the same thing where it's either taking place at night when the place is almost empty and dark outside and inside or taking place in big industrial areas with lots of naturally dark places or abandoned places like the first Lighthouse level in CT. The pandora airport level just does away with all those things. It's like they wanted a Jack Ryan level or something where he can run around the airport looking confused while talking in his headset but they're stuck with gameplay of Sam in a ninja suit, just a horrible match.

It's kind of what they wanted to do with the cancelled version of Conviction, but they concluded that it wasn't a good direction, I'm guessing because it didn't feel like splinter cell, and I'd guess they were right. I think you could maybe do a mix of gameplay where you're scoping out a place and doing the spy shit like you said a bit akin to double agent's hq gameplay, and then switching over to your sneaking suit to infiltrate the place you scoped out/wire-tapped etc.

It's a tough nut to crack though. Before MGSV that would have been the natural trendy thing to do, make it an open world sandbox thing. Now that's kind of played out though, so what direction to take it is kind of hard to come up with.

Maybe now there's been so much time that people would lap up a very traditional chaos theory-style slow splinter cell entry with no innovation, I dunno, but I don't think splinter cell had mass appeal to begin with, like most stealth games they can get kind of popular but not a tentpole franchise. Assassin's creed got to be that way by abandoning everything stealth, and wasn't really that stealthy to begin with.

The problem with most if not all crime games is that they never actually deal with the logistics of being a criminal or commiting crime and instead you just shuffle along from set piece to set piece
There's this free play mod for GTA called LS RED which has a super in-depth crime system where you have to plan out everything from following basic traffic laws, dumping cars, and even laundering money amongst other things

Isn't payday that very type of game where you do some very simple actual robbing for like 2 minutes and then just mow down cops for the rest of the mission?

I've heard good things about Invisible Inc. More of a spy game, but plays with the idea of how long you stay in a level aka how much of the loot you take with you and is good at introducing complications during the mission, while not focusing on the action part. I imagine someething like that could serve as a good framework for a heist game that's focused on the actual cool part, and not the aftermath.

I didn't read your post properly. Yes you are right about Payday. I can't think of any games which put a lot of focus on the actual prep and planning except for GTA V but that is very on rails.

I feel like the perfect stealth game would be a mix between Splinter Cell and Hitman where you have to use both "hard' and social stealth. I just want a "grounded" spy game where you engage in actually espionage and intelligence gathering instead of gunning down hordes of enemies or sneaking through massive facilities by hiding behind crates.

Great video and cool mod rec. I think the sense of stakes and a persistent campaign with you gambling with your built up resources by accepting a mission like you would in an X-com or a darkest dungeon, or declaring war in a grand strategy where if you fuck up there's no takebacks, and during the mission, deciding whether to stay longer for more loot etc like Invisible Inc. And of course the less risky missions you play before the big heist are about getting intel/resources for that big heist that you'll bet everything on, which is already kind of what they did in GTA V story just without any sense of stakes. You could also take a page out of stuff like total war's general loyalty-stuff, bringing in some of those caper clichés of the loose cannon psycho crew member or the traitor who could potentially stab you in the back if they have a low trust score or whatever.

I'm not sure how in depth LS Red goes or how much it actually feels like described in the video but if it manages the stakes like that then the "simple" gameplay limitations of some heists wouldn't matter much, since as you described, stuff like just driving the car slowly and not bumping into anything would feel thrilling even if it's mechanically simple just for how much is on the line of your invested time. Gonna check it out for sure.

It would be nice if the "Intel" you gather actually means something. I've yet to seen it be anything other than just an excuse for a mission or part of a linear story. To be part of a world where events a lot of stuff is out there, you just have to know it to see it would be awesome. Like knowing that two people always meet in this cellar in this place and exchange this information, and depending on how you handle them or the new information you get from them leads to new situations etc. Maybe it's asking for too much.

While not a simulation like that nor likely to have any real gameplay of any note I'm really hoping that the new zaum game will capture some of that feeling.

yeah yeah they're not the same team etc etc but just the premise alone I think is worth looking out for.

>"grounded" spy game where you engage in actually espionage and intelligence gathering
how would that work with hitman and sc gameplay exactly? sounds more like a strategy game on a map where you manage resources considering wiretapping and listening in on conversations doesn't exactly make for riveting gameplay nor requires any of the hitman and sc stuff

I mean it's more or less what you already do in Hitman, most of the game is just figuring out what you will do in your eventual successful run
