Most of the original game was made with unpaid talent, when the unpaid talent left, the actual team turned out to be incompetent clowns, the people responsible for the good stuff were the unpaid ones. They had to cut a shit ton of content, and the new writing for the lore and setting was garbage.

>early access
Basically fucking around and constantly back and forth in changing fundamental shit. Saw mechanics like temperature being removed from the game pretty early and racial abilities going nowhere because the forums had a sook. Contrary to popular belief, Starbound did not actually have a Kickstarter but it did indeed have crowdfunding, operated by Humble Bundle.

Devs were known to have contacted the creator of the popular Avali mod and wanted to take possession of the race for no monetary compensation but the creator told them to fuck off, if not by those exact words.

>original release
While the devs, ostensibly consisting of unpaid teenagers - eventually stopped dicking about, they then went stapling a story on top that runs parallel to the main gear progression but sucks dick for their space sandbox game, and wasn't really much different from the EA builds a year before otherwise.

>post-release
Four 'major' updates with a varying amount of years in between them. Fishing, mechs (very unsatisfying), space stations (almost pointless), and then what are essentially radiant quests with hunting down NPCs. The only thing really carrying the game were furry mods doing their thing for pixelated sex and an overhaul one that just makes the game more miserable than anything, also goes taking parts of random mods which was made especially apparent when assets for a Zoroark vore mod were found in a later build for some fucking reason.

The source code eventually got leaked but Tiy apparently didn't give too much of a shit. Anyway I do have a few odd images about its development woes if that might be relevant.

I think Kyora already has some great improvements over Terraria.

Terrain destruction with your Pickaxe is an AoE, which is fucking great compared to Terraria tile destruction. Mining ores in Terraria is fucking dogshit and that's something you do almost the entirety of the game.

That's the only improvement I've seen so far and obviously the graphics are prettier than Terraria.

unironically?
an indie game that came out a little after the minecraft boom of 2009, that was handwaved away as being some shitty "2D mincraft clone" (we had much lower standards for what is and isnt a clone / rip-off back then)

it eventually grew into what is arguably one of the best in the genre, isnt really like minecraft at all and is more like an RPG or adventure game in all honesty. With tight controls, a great progression, really tough challenge, and lots of creative freedom.
it scratches a lot of itches, and is one of the best indie games on steam for its time

I dont know if it holds up today, if you played it in the heyday youd probably agree with the above, it was actually genuinely great at what it did. Incredible amounts of content for pennies, one of those games that just seems to get better every stage you advance (well, until the post OG hardmode bosses, then it went autistic)

for todays standards, I dunno, its still good but I wouldnt assume it will blow you away since we've had 10000 other indie survival crafting games since.

It's like if Minecraft had actual content.
Other than finding an ender eye, using it to reach a stronghold/end portal, activating it with however many ender eyes, and then finding and killing the ender dragon the rest of the game is just fluff and most of it can be skipped if you just find enough diamonds.
Terraria requires you to go to several places and being able to survive those require good gear and consumables which will force you to experience non-critical content.

I agree, because it was blocky and you mined and crafted, thats it, a 2D minecraft ripoff

meanwhile the gameplay was more about gearing up for a boss, summoning it to slay it and make new gear, then using it to best a hard biome and make more gear to fight a new boss and... so on
lot of fun little mechanics intertwined, the crafting and building both feel irrelevant and yet also actually fun and meaningful

its actually better than minecraft in every way, but it wasnt ever trying to be 2D minecraft.

Terraria Otherworlds.
They said they "didn't like the direction" it was going in, but I feel Re-Logic is just scared of what might happen if their next game doesn't live up to Terraria, their Lighting in a Bottle is all they're currently known for.

Meanwhile Chucklefish, the studio founded by their disgruntled former employee and terrible artist, is known for their colossal failure of a game, how abuse they can be to indie devs they publish for, but for some reason are still getting more people to trust them.

Seriously though, unless the studio was some kind of worker co-op all the code/assets belongs to the company. All they'd have to do is transfer ownership.
Even in open source projects you're able to change licenses as long as you get permission from contributors, and those that don't accept (or reply) you can just re-write the code.

Chucklefuck stopped posting about him on social media and some people assume he died, presumably of electrocution since you can see all those cables in the background. You're supposed to wrap plastic around exposed cables and cords when you have a puppy, since they like biting stuff and depending on what they bite into, that can be really dangerous. Pic related is what I wrapped around my PC cords when I got a dog.

I replayed it somewhat recently, and the world-gen, mining, and combat all feel horrible.

Imagine a mod for Terraria that:
>turns worlds into single-biome worlds
>has a spaceship that is essentially a menu to move to other worlds
>has a space theme
And you'd have a game a thousand times better than Chucklefuck's Cuckbound

I played it for a bit and I got bored. Despite all of its numerous flaws, Starbound (with a few mods) is just a more fun game. I tried building a base on an ocean planet with an elevator all the way to the sea floor, but it was a big planet, so the elevator trip took about 90 seconds.

Guns start outpacing melee fast in starbound. The second you get armor & a green or blue gun melee lags behind unless you find a melee with an ultra reliable special move until you start getting t5 armor. If youre playing the story by the way youre practically handed 2 guns that last the entire game. Because damage is tied to armor instead of solely a weapons rarity you have more freedom of choice in starbound. Besides that the games not a boss rush fag simulator so you use what you like instead of just numbers go up gaymin. I went through the entire game with a sword that made a bigger sword. Very fun weapon.

A sequel would probably not do that great
Terraria is like the top tier of its little 2d sandbox genre, every other game that attempts it misses key elements.
Starbound made building unnecessary because of the infinite planets thing, why the fuck would you ever build anywhere besides your ship? And you never get to see your world change like it does in Terraria because you keep moving somewhere else

Terraria 2 would probably also fuck things up in some way
