Never played any of their games before, should I get 13 Sentinels ($15) or Unicorn Overlord ($24)? Both on the Switch
Also why are none of their games on PC? It's 2025

13 Sentinels is the better title and cheaper, so you should go with that. Doesn't mean Unicorn Overlord is bad by any means, but 13 Sentinels is higher priority to play among Vanillaware's titles.

Some people blame Vanillaware/Kamitani for a variety of reasons, others blame Atlus (who had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the PC market by SEGA).

Vanillaware is an independent game company from Japan since the 2000s. At the time they had a contract with ATLUS USA to publish/localize their games. It is strongly implied ATLUS (now SEGA) has a "right of first refusal" with Vanillaware. It basically means when they want to publish a game SEGA will get asked first before they move on to somebody else (Nis America, XSeed, etc). So far both companies are happy with this arrangement.

PC Vegans like you who demand "Vanillaware on PC" don't own anything in their company. They are a private entity, like Valve Corp isn't required to port their 1st party games to consoles like Half Life Alyx is only on PC. One of the higher ups at Vanillaware George has only spoken implicitly about hating PC gaming and you, PC Vegan. So pretty much, shut the fuck up. 56 year old PC Vegans have delusional angry child tantrum entitlement issues.

Both great, however bear in mind 13 Sentinels is a bit of a one and done game, I've never returned to it. Whilst I played Unicorn Overlord twice for the hard mode.

Well, like the other guy said, they are all ranking top tier games against each other. I haven't played 13 Sentinals or Muramasa, but I'd put Odin Sphere at the top, and then Unicorn Overlord and Dragon's Crown might be tied - it's hard to rank a co-op beatem up against a single player Ogre Battle when they are so fundamentally different. I might put co-op Dragon's Crown above Unicorn Overlord just cuz you can vibe with the bros, but single player Dragon's Crown is definitely below Unicorn Overlord

13 sentinels is just phenomenal. UO is really good but I think you need to enjoy it's genre more so than 13S

You can emulate both the PS3 and Vita. I have not played either of these emulated, but it should be possible. Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is on the PS3 emu's compatibility list but I can't find Dragon's Crown on there, though I can find a video from 8 years ago of someone playing DC on the PS3 emu

is grimgrimoire a good introduction to vanillaware?

13 Sentinels is god tier but is essentially a VN, it's 90+% story to 10% gameplay. Doesn't stop it being awesome, but be aware of what you're getting into.

Unicorn Overlord is also great, and is more of a game-y game, if you get what I mean. Some say it's too easy and it is, but it's still a fun experience with a lot to mess with and some gorgeous art, great music etc.

OP pic reminds me I still need to really sit down and focus on the Muramasa DLC.

What are the odds that Unicorn Overlord will get cheaper? All the difficulty complaints is turning me off from it, and the demo does kind give off some vibe that I might lose steam on it the more I play

Honestly speaking it's the weakest game of all of their modern releases, it's fairly short and made with minimal assets so doesn't show off what they're capable of. It's a cool game for sure, worth a play, but I'd argue it's not the strongest entry point for a newcomer to their games when they have some more compelling stuff available.

I feel like Odin Sphere is probably the best "start" for a newcomer because it's the closest thing to showing the appeal of all their games in one (side scrolling combat, multiple stories that intertwine with each other, high fantasy setting, gorgeous art) and the modern console port is especially pretty. That said I would honestly start with what interests you most.

tl;dr GrimGrimoire is cool but a weak entry because you're basically comparing against a bunch of amazing games

it's a flawed and somewhat simple game. Like the mechanics are rock solid and the presentation is what you'd expect from Vanillaware, but the gameplay suffers from a few major flaws and the devs really half assed the balance, what with enemies never using more than basic weapons etc. also Battle Preview is just way too powerful, not sure what they were thinking letting it show you every last RNG roll before it happens.

13 Sentinels is the only game they've made that I've tried but couldn't get into. I don't mind story-heavy games, but 13 Sentinels has nothing going for it outside of the story, and it just didn't draw me in.
