I had been hoping someone would make a successor to Ogre Battle for ages, and UO was pretty much exactly what I wanted.
Anonymous No.720311827 >>720312047

it just needed a more involved story.
The only thing they meaningfully added was the thief and archer in the beginning of the game, however it was the same tired shit through the rest of the game: Do you kill them/abandon them or not.

Ogre Battle had actual meaningful choices impacting the story.
Was a shame that in 64, everyone got chaos ending because they over leveled everyone.

Dragons Crown was amazing on release when you could get other players to do everything, but once those left and you had to use bots it's just terrible, but DC still had the best food/cooking in videogames

I had feeling that Vanillaware ran out of time, I loved the game but I agree that the story could have been better and included more choices than just "Do you want to execute this free unit" Here's hoping their next game is just as good.

You'd think that after Atlus released Persona and SMT on steam Vanillaware would follow cause sales, but no. PC bad, can't release shit on that cursed platform even if it made you money. Quite admirable stance, retarded but admirable. At least they got guts to just stick by their principles.

Attack order (initiative) is the most important thing to understand in UO. I think most people's issues with the game systems stem from not paying enough attention to the order. Targeting is the next most important after attack order.
If you can figure out those two concepts, maybe the rest will fall into place. In general you wan all your guys' initiative to be higher than all the enemy's, and you want your guys to move in a certain order. If the opponent has a Cover skill for example like the Hoplite class, you need someone on your side to move first who can wreck their shit, or you're just going waste half your attacks getting cockblocked by a tin can. If the enemy has a Shaman, do something about them first. Etc.

It's a 7/10 game that could've been way better with some changes.
>Press skills
Just letting the player occasionally interrupt with some input would make the battling way more engaging. It wouldn't have to be much; think of something like "slotting in" from the jank ass game in pic rel. (Battle Chip Challenge)
>More RTS mechanics
I understand that UO belongs to a subgenre that was more popular in Japan, and is like that Yugioh game on Gamecube. Still, I think its overworld mechanics are kind of barebones

I legit think it's because PC has a bazillion different resolutions and that factor directly fucks with their 2D art, which mindbreaks them since they need to prepare their art models for downscaling and upscaling and that is insane work for a jap dev. On console you literally have 1 fixed resolution and that's it.
Of course, they are too embarrassed to admit it so they would rather have people think they set PCs on fire for techno-racism reasons.

Nice to see that Vanillaware still don't know shit about balancing gameplay, and still didn't bother to hire anyone who has talent for that.
This was a problem even in Muramasa, the game was fun but it was either too easy or bullshit, there was no in-between.

>no money
You mean the fortunes of no-money that fell into Sega, Atlus, and especially RGG when they started porting, to the point the last one basically said that people buying Yakuza titles for like $9 are still making them money even today, PC is their most dedicated and viable player base? Atlus had to be dragged kickign and screaming into the modern era but then was 'surprised', once under control of Sega, that things like the P4 Golden sold a ton at only $20 and that getting it out of Vita jail was a masterful improvement. Hell, Sega themselves knew it when Valkyria Chronicles went from an obscure PS3 title to a full featured, revamped and all DLC included, reasonably priced PC title that sold well indeed. It still took Atlus too long to get P5 Royal, but they're finally in line with how things should be.

Especially if Vanillaware needs to make more money and is concerned about being one game away from shit going under every fucking time, leaving the most long-tail sales viable platform (with the least fees mind you, nothing to license unlike console faggotry) out of the equation. They could do massively well if all they did was port a handful of their previous titles with Sega/Atlus help and release them on PC via Steam
>Odin Sphere Leifthrasir
>Grand Knight's History (this could probably also be released on mobile and rescued from PSP jail, actually put the EN subtitles/UI on this tme)
>Muramasa Rebirth
>Dragon's Crown Pro (preferably with some new DLC if this one sells well)
>13 Sentinels Aegis Rim
>Unicorn Overlord

The problem is Kamitani basically is petrified of letting anyone else do the porting for him and he doesn't know how to do it that well, but if he'd work with Sega and Atlus to just one success he'd probably realize he should have done it a lot earlier

In the engines they use, the resolutions aren't an issue really, not to mention the resolution of each bit of artwork is a different factor than what resolution you're playing the game in; anyone who's used some massively high res texture pack mod will see the difference. That said, modern consoles are literally gimped PCs and run games with the same/similar engines much of the time, but its not like there's some super magic done on consoles to just run things at one resolution - if anything the opposite is true; they use shittier upscaled dynamic resolutions; there's some video of the second Jedi Fallen Order / Survivor game basically rendering at like 800p or less . They really wouldn't have any problems with modern development and could make their art look even better with less bullshit, vs jumping through hoops for console stuff

It's a tough situation design-wise because they basically backed themselves in a corner where it's practically necessary. There are so many variables and random elements that without it, it would be practically unplayable unless you had a ton of patience for watching lengthy animations to sus out all the minutiae. But including it makes the game a braindead cakewalk.

>it would be practically unplayable unless you had a ton of patience for watching lengthy animations to sus out all the minutiae.
But that's the game. The fast forward and the battle prediction make the game less like a strategy game and more like a mobile gacha.
Anonymous No.720326764 >>720326832

They'd have to rethink a ton of other elements in the game then because the pacing would be unbearably slow for 99.9% of people.
Anonymous No.720326832 >>720326971
>>720326764
Vanillaware games are already niche, they filter 99% of people anyways.
Regardless, they had difficulty settings. I don't know why the "Hard mode" doesn't remove the battle spoiler. Normies are gonna play the regular difficulty anyways, keep the battle spoiler there for them and remove it for "Hard mode".
It's just bad design.

I think that if knowing the outcome of a battle ruins it then the game had design issues in general. Other SRPGs don't get ruined by them.

It's because it's not a "prediction", it IS the outcome of the battle, including RNG elements.

I guess that's fair. I just felt that UO's battles tended to be very all-or-nothing. Which again I think would be miserable to play without any sort of forecast. But I would agree it probably went too far.
