Happy Anniversary!
Yesterday was 9/9/2025, the 26th anniversary of the SEGA Dreamcast originally released on 9/9/1999.

Happy Anniversary Dreamcast! Damn shame you were the one that didn't make it out of gen 6. What did you think of the Dreamcast and SEGA in the console market in general?

Legend and genuinely just a bit too ahead of its time. They were dead on the money with online gaming being the future, but they were just a little too soon.

I wasn't a huge fan of the controller but the VMU shit was goated.
Had many a good afternoons playing Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, Quake III: Arena, and Shenmue.

Sony advertising an empty box is what somehow killed the Dreamcast, and SEGA supposedly burning bridges with developers but I don't have any reliable sources on hand for that.

I don't even think they were too soon. Sega's console business was just already hit with a mortal wound from all the mismanagement from the 90s. I honestly do not think that anything with the Dreamcast could have saved their console business, too much damage was caused by the era of infinite Genesis add-ons and the management of the Saturn combined with Sony just pouring too much corpo money into the PlayStation and paying devs to ignore Sega consoles to effectively bully them out of business. I don't fault people for not realizing it because pretty much anyone using this site was too young at the time to understand just how much Sony successfully entering the video game market changed the entire industry. Both Nintendo and Sega were small potatoes financially compared to the wealth of Sony at the time, the difference proportionally was about as significant as it was when Microsoft entered the market when financially compared to Sony at the time.

Sony fucked them over hard with "$299" back when they were getting prepped for the Saturn. Sure, SEGA wasn't the best in management and the add-ons didn't do them much service (including the SEGA CD), but if they didn't get panicked by PlayStation and just stuck to releasing the Saturn when they planned, maybe things would be different. Keyword being "maybe"

On second thought Sony started making contractual agreements for 3rd party exclusives for PlayStation literally with the original PS1 (which only got worse and worse as Sony grew with PlayStation). And of course their marketing was going to hit much harder since they were the CD player and Walkman guys who knew what the target demographic felt was "cool". SEGA wouldn't be able to compete in either of these fields against Sony, which they probably knew.

Sony just had too much more money to throw around the industry at the time for Sega or Nintendo to really compete with. It could have just as easily been Nintendo who had to drop out of the console race if Nintendo didn't have the extra buffer that it had compared to Sega to carve out and solidify their niche. Both Nintendo and Sega were purely video game companies, while Sony was a massive multimedia corporation literally 6+ times the size. Neither company had the capital to counter Sony's bully tactics especially in an era when technical innovation and graphical advancement was prized more than actual game quality. Corps like Sony and Microsoft were able to ride that trend by just dumping as much money as they can into it.

It's such a shame that the history of the industry played out the way that it did. Now that we're past the era where open worlds and more polygons is enough to assure financial success I feel that consumer tastes have been progressively shifting back away from the design ethos Sony and Microsoft pushed back to interesting actual game design but the damage was already done. I think the industry in general simply became much more boring when Sega had to become a 3rd party developer beholden to market trends rather than owners of a platform to establish their own trends.

Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were built specifically for the Sega Dreamcast's SH4 CPU.

Dreamcast goes all out on transparency and lighting, supports 8-bit destination alpha blending with 24-bit sourcing 32-bit z-buffer, Saturn and Dreamcast diffuse+specular lightning based on palette indices, Dreamcast used tile layered deferred rendering which supported order independent transparency.

Technically SA1 does have dynamic lighting effects, but you can't see them because they almost always get overridden with palette lighting. the Chaos underlight, which was in some early screenshots, is only visible with Ninja Lights but it still technically in the game. Oddly enough it's nulled out in the Autodemo. Knuckles has a custom Ninja light configured in the cutscene where he has collected all the Master Emerald shards.

Sonic Adventure 1 was highly downgraded in terms of lighting on on the GC. SA2 lacked a bunch of shadowing effects which used the DC's modifier volumes. SA2 DC abused the Dreamcast's volumetric fog features for some interesting effects, like security alarms (Iron Gate, Flying Dog, Egg Quarters) and approximated "rain waves" (White Jungle). These effects are gone in SA2B, replaced with full-screen overlays (Flying Dog, Egg Quarters) or with a rotating vertex light (Iron Gate)

Sega changed SA1's palette based lighting to specular lighting in SADX GC port and they barely even used it. SA2 CnkMultiDraw does support Vertex color + Lighting though used in Events

The SA1 DC to SADX GC porting team likely ran into problems implementing palette lighting, so they figured it would be easier to just update everything that didn't work immediately after they were brought over to SADX. Even SA2B doesn't use specular in the same way the DC version uses it.

Sonic fans have made attempts to replicate these effects in the SADX (Direct3D 8) and SA2B (DX9) Windows PC ports.

If they showed this during the initial reveal of the Switch 2, I might have cared a whole lot more and maybe even tried to self justify buying one or pre-ordering. Thankfully, that didn't happen so I really think it's too little, too late. At least for me. Being able to play DC games online would be cool though.

It's quite half baked attempt even if game do have few leftovers, I mean, you can't just copypaste code and expect work. Real shame.

Also lot of DC game ports have ton of texture and audio compression, latter is easier to fix at least.

I'm still waiting for Sega to announce some kind of live service with games from their consoles.
