It's called Chimera Squad. The gameplay itself was pretty good but the story was gay as fuck.

It's all about how the evil humans are prosecuting the poor alien refugees who just want to live peacefully on Earth now, despite trying to kill or enslave all of humanity very recently. There's even a mission to hunt down and kill Bradford because he's leading a human supremacist group, a splinter XCOM, and he's getting in the way of aliens integrating into Earth society.

They made Chimera Squad, it didn't do very well for obvious reasons, and they interpreted that as XCOM no longer being viable. It also doesn't help that they have no idea where to go with the story. We won't be seeing a new XCOM for a very long time.

I haven't finished a WOTC story playthrough but I might just skip it anyway because the DLCs were clearly designed for autistic fans who already got done with their first playthrough and followed every dev blog, which is why WOTC chronology is dogshit and you get hit with updates on project avatar before you even know it exists because you got hit with about 300 side missions before you even raided the first blacksite and the game's pacing is shitting itself to death.

I like it a lot but it's pretty different than XCOM, aside from tile based arenas, cover systems, and being turn based. It's a lot heavier on the story, lots of reading, far more build autism, and much less action than XCOM. I guess you could say it's somewhere between XCOM and BG3.

There's been a theory among the fanbase that the Commander himself wasn't what the Elders were after, but what was controlling him. They believe that the reason why the Commander was kept in stasis and playing wargame simulations while connected to their psionic network was that the Asaru, the true Ethereal from The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, was bonded to the Commander.

What the fuck are you talking about. Bradford appears in a few lines of dialogue, where he's skeptical about the Chimera Squad, but is not otherwise involved. The human supremacist group (that is actually working with all kinds of aliens, because they want to be the human Advent) is led by an absolutely different character who doesn't look, sound or act anything like Bradford.

Maybe would work with portals. You still defend earth but now you also send guerrilla forces to the alien planet which then get intercepted by the alien's equivalent of xcom. Villain is the alien commander.

I enjoyed it a lot. There's a lot of heart and soul put into it, but it is very much capeshit and you need to have a high tolerance for that kind of writing.
The card based mechanics seemed offputting initially, but it ended up working well for the setting At first I thought they should have just made XCOM, but with Marvel characters, but that grindy type of gameplay doesn't really suit superheroes—it needs a little bit of bam ham to feel good. Turns end up being more tactical as you plan out the best use of the cards in your hand. Many don't like that, but I appreciate the srpgs with more puzzle like elements.
