perfect middle ground between oldschool execution, complex characters with a lot of player freedom and high skill ceiling stuff, and modern quality of life improvements like buffers that make it more consistent and let you take a week off and still be able to do your bnb when you come back

This is what kills me about so many modern fighters. You used to be actually able to tell who was playing from their actions alone. It isn't just that the internet allows for faster and better optimization; games were a lot more lenient/loose with their systems and characters' abilities. Everything now feels so controlled and restrictive.

Yes three lanes I don't know if it was competitive viable or a "good" mechanic but for causal play during my childhood it was fun. Any ring outs also add a comedic component to these games especially when RB1's ring out "walls" were done so creatively.

It seemed pretty cool that the entire fight could migrate to other lanes. iirc in RB2 it was like one and a half lanes, you had an "outside" lane where you kind of went Punch-Out mode and could only really dive or tumble back in or knock the other guy into your lane. So it wound up just being a glorified sidestep.
