Bioshock and MGS are super obvious about their political messaging, but at the end of the day they just present those messages as part of their narratives without explicitly telling players how to interpret those messages. The players are left to construct their own conclusions, even if the intended ones are up on a glowing billboard..
Nobody likes sermons or lectures they didn't sign up for tho, so if a game tries to dictate HOW the player should interpret the political messaging, you naturally end up with disgruntled players who feel talked down to and patronized. Maybe sometimes it's justified, but you can't convince anyone they're wrong that way.
