I was there when it happened and it started during when the anime was airing the Zamasu / Goku Black arc.
at the time /a/ was all about waifus. you can go to any anime/manga thread and the funny posts were supposed to be waifu posts. and they were actually pretty unfunny and waifu posting was old at this time. /a/ was genuinely boring and there wasn't anything original or creative being posted.
now during the Zamasu arc there was a character called Zamasu who would use "Ningen" (mortal) in such a way it would feel like a slur. so anons started posting his face while greentexting

anons found it funny and it started from here. Eventually the tournament of power started which brought over plenty of hispanic memes as well. around that time everything that wasn't Dragon Ball was considered moe on /dbs/. So if you started waifu posting your post would get reported and thus deleted. this made the Dragon Ball thread different from every other thread on /a/. They were calling themselves scholars and they were typing like intellectuals. Of course anons found that funny. At the time it was genuinely refreshing after 10+ years of stale waifu posting.
