"Self-insert" is too strong but of course there's elements of Kris's character and the story of Deltarune as a whole that are deeply personal to Toby. He's more or less devoted half his life to it.
I don't want to speculate and read into things too much because it's a strange thing to do about someone's very personal struggle, but it's not hard to imagine how Toby fucking his wrists and now being very limited in how he can use his hands to create the things he loves resonates with Deltarune's themes of loss of control and being unable to express yourself. For such a personal project to become so reliant on other people to complete it, I'm sure Toby has complicated feelings about that.

In general I think people find it hard to understand any kind of nuance. Like I said, it's closer to viewing your stepson as part of your family than adopting somebody to be your child.
