Have you ever done an arbitrary challenge run in a game? Stuff like playing through a game but with a self-imposed challenge, like not using certain mechanics, doing things completely out of order, only allowing saving in specific places, using none or obviously suboptimal gear etc?

No but sometimes I take my roleplaying too far. I'll not level up unless it's at an appropriate time and play in suboptimal ways.

When the remake of SMRPG came out I decided to play it without equipping defensive gear since I'd played the original a bunch and its not a hard game in the first place

Was fun, made combat a lot more tense since slipping up on blocks meant you'd easily be bodied

Did a bunch for Lost Kingdoms II, usually restricting myself to cards from specific evolution lines or on specific themes.
Like only using cards that evolve from Lizardman (EZ mode because that includes all the dragons), or Skeleton (also EZ because Banshee), or Sand Beetle (surprisingly easy because Sand Worm), or Man Trap + dryads (and I count Treants because they eovlved from man traps in the first game[this run still sucked even when cheating because holy shit Devil Traps do zero damage to the final boss]).

... very much wish FromSoft would stop remaking Souls games to make an LK III but alas, the millions of dollars and dozens of game awards they get mean they never will.

Yeah, it was what actually helped me finally beat FFV.
I kept losing interest partway through because a well balanced party just kinda coasts through the game and has obvious answers for any scenario.
My first time beating the game was with all mages.
Red mage, blue mage, black mage, white mage, time mage, and summoner.
No one learned any other job, and it kept combat interesting enough to make it fun the whole way through.

In every elder scrolls game I play I will only ever use skills that are my starting major ones (in Morrowind's case my 5 major/minor, in oblivion my major, in skyrim I pick a set of 5 skills to be my skills). Everything else gets as little use as I can possibly do
I have a region locked Ironman in oldschool runescape

Of course. But for spicing things up, not the achievement.
FFX, only ability spheres, no damaging use items
FFT, personal hack, 3 person party
DMC, modded DMD BP runs
DS1, level 1, no ranged attacks
DDDA, level 1, no throwblasts
Ys games, no item healing

Things like Pokemon and Morrowind get subconscious restrictions to outright cheese everything. Nothing is too hard, I just like seeing the game over screen and have some tension.

Did an "RP run" leveling 1-60 in WoW where I only wore armor if it aesthetically matched my other armor, forced myself to walk instead of run in towns, don't use flights or hearthstonse or whatever, read every bit of quest dialogue, and could only talk "in character" even in situations where talking out of character would really help (couldn't talk to anybody out of character or explain I was roleplaying or doing a challenge run)

shit was torture.

I try to 1cc games all the time even if this is not a something the game is known for. Not all games lend themselves to this. Recently 1cc'd Doom64. No deaths. took me around 6 or so runs to do it. Also 1cc'd Shadow of Mordor twice. The nemsis system is so cool and so many ohh shit moments.

I'm doing a football manager run right now where I started unemployed, joined the first Portuguese club that would let me join, and now I'm trying to win the champions league with Casa Pia by only signing Brazillian players
I'm not even Brazillian/Portuguese, I've just never played in the Portuguese league before and thought this would be a fun story
The league is annoying because I can't win as consistently as benfica and Porto, I've been 3rd and 4th in the league almost every year. We also lost a coefficient spot so only 1st and 3nd place go to the champions league

Haven't won a trophy yet but I get to the semifinals of the europa league every year before Manchester united kills me- it's 2031 now.

SPORTS GAMES ARE FUN. START PLAYING SPORTS GAMES.

Sometimes, but I rarely do it for the purposes of challenge and more just for my amusement.
>Being a single type trainer in a Pokemon game
>Playing FE and killing off specific units (I did a Silver Snow run in 3H one time where I got rid of all the Black Eagles and only used the characters that were unaffiliated to a house)
>Playing as a Sim that only has shit traits

All that crazy shit like "Beat X without getting hit once." is not my idea of a fun time.

I do this with the Elder Scrolls games all the time.
I did a orc barbarian run through Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim where I only looted shit that I was sure I needed, like gold, potions and direct upgrades to my gear. Toss everything else.
I did this mostly to stop myself from hoarding too much shit, and it worked pretty well. Was pretty fun.

I started my first ever Nuzlocke on Emerald. Today I lost a fren for the first time, Jabra. I didn't pay attention while grinding, and a Nincada leech life critted him twice in fast forward.

That's how it's supposed to go. Nuzlocking was never meant to be hard it was more of a challenge where you immerse yourself and bond with the pokemon. Retards on youtube of course made it into a joke and now people grind for what's supposed to be a chill playthrough with some drama.

I tried fists only in Skyrim and it was seriously such an awful experience I gave up like two hours in. Your options are extremely limited and you get the most benefit out of sneaking, so heavy armor is a no go for the most part. It has some fun animations for kills, but that's all it has going for it.
Anonymous No.720366924 [Report] >>720366993
>>720366792
You said all sorts of incorrect things but the gist that it offers nothing more than any other playstyle is correct (except living out the brawler fantasy)

>>720366792

I looked into doing one as well, and the only ways to increase your damage are to abuse an enchant from one pair of gloves, and to take a heavy armor perk that doesn't do shit because the items are scaled. Even then, the unarmed combat, sans the occasional kill animations, is not very satisfying.

Anonymous No.720367236 [Report] >>720367307
>>720366993
The heavy armor perk is legit and yes you need the enchantment. It's perfectly viable as a playstyle but hardly the most effective. And Skyrim of course lacks any way to make it feel satisfying so...yeah. I unironically had a better time in MW with hand to hand, and MW is click to kill.

I constantly do a "colony-born" run in Rimworld, where I'm only allowed to have colonists that were born into the colony from my own pawns or were gained as a part of an event (mainly rituals since I disabled crash-pods and other similar ones). If I loose all my fertile pawns (or don't have a breeding pair) and I have no young ones to replace them I'm allowed to acquire enough outsiders to form a new breeding pair. It does take a significant amount of time to get a proper colony rolling but it's quite rewarding to see several generations of Pawns scurrying around the base working.

It's not really the perks, I think I downloaded it before he added those. It's the attack speed multiplier it gives that scales with your Hand-to-Hand.

Yeah, just get the old version then. Some of the new perks seem pretty cool though, there's a range extender and one that lets you absorb health.
Could be fun with attack speed, might try it if I ever get back on my old vampire ninja character. Roleplaying a ninja spy was the only way I could make a Hlaalu run sound cool.

I occasionally do what i've dubbed a "street thug" run of GTA 3. Goal is ultimately to smooth out some of the videogamey aspects of the gameplay that I don't need as someone with knowledge of the game to get an overall experience more in line with the tone of how the setting sells itself. Main points/limitations are;

>only use weapons given by missions/found in game world as pickups
>no abusing spirit of the above by using hidden packages or starting gang massacres for their drops
>no using pay n' spray unless mandated by mission - must use police bribes found in game world (no vigilante bonus either)
>ideally no saving after each mission - do 3-4 before saving

This requires the player to actually go to the lesser travelled parts of the city for pickups and keeps in with the vibe of claude being some no-good punk just scrounging around to survive - not too far off the gta 2 intro in a way.

Played through Gravity Circuit using just about nothing but the basic combo. I somewhat regret using the first two chips a bit but the game gave them to me before I even thought about doing the run like this so it's whatever.
Fun time. I never realized how hard I coasted through just with OP techniques and chips (not to mention HP) the first time around until I had to start actually learning boss patterns and level layouts. Final boss had me held up for several fucking hours since it's a 3-fight gauntlet, but I got through it. I'd recommend it if you enjoyed the game.

In action games when it's possible, I like learning how to beat every segment/boss fight without taking damage nor abusing whatever broken mechanic/build would allow me to do this without not even engaging with the enemies/obstacles at all in the first place.
In RPGs I like to keep my party a little underlevelled unless it's mathematically impossible to win/only with extremely favorable RNG. In stuff like Pokemon I also don't use items during fights even if the boss trainers can do that.
In multiplayer I very rarely go for what's usually considered the best character/loadout, unless it also happens to be the most fun way to play in that very specific game.
