Games weren’t focus grouped quite as hard 30 years ago. Gaming was a lot more experimental and wild in the 90s and back. Plus, people had way less access to way less games so anything they did happen to engage with would be talked about and fondly remembered far more so you could get what now looks like wildly disproportionate cultural impact.
