Is there something stopping devs from just going back to UE4?

They ARE going back to UE4. Stellar Blade is Sony published on UE4. Wuthering Waves has better graphics than a lot of UE5 games and its UE4.

in a few years one studio will get sick of it and just write their own engine, and then all the other sheep studios will follow.

Yes. All major developers and publishers sign long-term deals with Epic, buying a certain number of licenses for cheaper. The terms state that they must use the latest version. To use Unreal Engine 4, not only would they have no access to support from Epic, but they'd have to pay a significantly larger fee as they would be operating outside of the license they already paid for, effectively paying for Unreal Engine two times, noting that the first time is discounted.

there's nothing wrong with ue5. in fact it's the best engine ever made. it allows for dynamic radiance caching and complex geometry without affecting fps. no other engine can accomplish the same level of fidelity in realtime.

So why does it look and run like shit?
Anonymous No.720384285
>>720384150
my theory is that developers keep using the usual LOD asset workflow that involves a lot of masks and little geometry detail to get high FPS, but ue5 wants you to do the reverse. it hates masks and loves tons of geometry and will run optimally that way. so basically, shit devs are making it look bad.

Epic funds a lot of small AA studios who use UE5, most notably with E33. AAA devs are using it because its cheaper than using their own engine.

I think this is too low effort desu. You should have edited the webm to have something video game related on the helicopter.

They likely have signed deals with Epic forcing them to use UE5. Not the devs specifically but the publishers.

You don't understand anon, we can't just have nice models, nice textures, baked lighting and 1-2 well chosen shaders like depth/displacement map stuff. We HAVE TO make everything into blurry ai temporal vignette DOF RTX. It's just how it is.

Wuchang ran like dogshit with terrible frame latency and traversal stutter but it is the best looking game of all time.
