I don't get it. How did this garner so much attention? How did it bring down digital storefronts? The world is full of metroidvanias, why is this the one that blew up?

>How did this garner so much attention
It became a meme because of how long development took and normie trend chasers got swept up in the hype.
>How did it bring down digital storefronts?
They didn't take preorders so a million people all tried to buy it at once and overwhelmed their payment processing.

I'm playing it right now (never touched HK). It's a normal, well executed game with cringe childish artstyle and characters that clash with the story/atmosphere (which is the reason Blasphemous and The Last Faith shit over HK in this aspect). I can't believe there are thousands of people who played this but never tried Sotn or Aria of Sorrow. In the past I even recognized the success of Dead Cells but this one escapes me.

The first one is GOATed and sold 15 million copies. Metroid's franchise sales are at like 17 million and Castlevania at 20.

I've played 100+ Metroidvanias including all of Metroid and all of IGA Castlevania. HK and Silksong are better than them all. What now?

There is a cartoon kid pilgrim that sings and a cartographer mantis and they're both insufferable to my ears. Especially considering I'm walking through bug corpses and carapaces all the time. I don't remember kid cartoons being in dark souls

I'm not criticizing the cute artstyle per se. Like I've said I've come to appreciate Dead Cells which is a fist in the eye visually-wise. Read my comment better and stop extrapolating words out of context.
I'm not liking Silksong for very similar reasons I didn't like Bloodstained. Perhaps I'll keep playing it and appreciate it better if shills don't compulse me to uninstall

Hollow Knight, despite what redditors in disguise might say, was a great game. It had a great ost, artstyle, great combat, level design, and a cool story.
7 years of hype, a 10 dollar price tag, and the game is literally just more Hollow Knight with even better level design, more difficult, and a cute bug girl. We'll also get DLC for it, and most likely for free too.
It's not rocket science, it's literally just a great game with a great sequel, and a 10 dollar price tag.

The combat and level design in Silksong is tight. Only a few games are so polished. Grime and Nine Sols come to mind.

But redditors love Hollow Knigger. Their metroidvania board is HK central. The game is unsurprisingly shit.

Hollow Knight was a very, very popular indie that came out in 2017. Its sequel, Silksong, was revealed in 2019. Fans expected to be playing this game like 6 years ago. Obviously that didn't happen, and in that time the anticipation grew to literally meme proportions. By 2025, anyone could've predicted how huge of a launch Silksong was going to have if the piece of shit "totally not vaporware guys" ever came out. But it did happen, and the world had 2 weeks to react to said happening. As such, you saw what happened on the day of release.

I appreciate the effort of making interconnected maps but level design is actually the thing that isn't piquing my interest. It's just big dimly lit purple/blue rooms in caves with bug corpses everywhere (and occasional industrial elements???), I already miss the green starting area. The enemies are either stupid grubs that walk at me or ninja ants with a miniboss moveset which is weird considering they are both normal common enemies but ok. Then there's the flying ones which only exist to make platforming more slow because I have no way to OHKO them like the flies they are. Which is another weird thing, normally enemies like that don't tank 4 hits and don't chase you (think of castlevania bats and medusas). The 3 bosses I beat so far were good. The guy that guards the ant area was also interesting because you had to lure it in the corridor to avoid it using one of its moves.
Another critique: you shouldn't design a game around the diagonal Castlevania kick it's too imprecise compared to the downwards one (which I assume is used in the first title)

Also I appreciate the destructible terrain but hate the traps (bad eyesight on my part). I think the designers couldn't decide if they wanted to make a fast game or a slow methodical one.

I get your complaints. Some flying enemies should have less hp I think. I'm also not a big fan of boss runbacks, but overall I enjoy the level design (both mechanically and visually). The diagonal kick was simple for me once I realized I only have to hold down + attack to execute it but you can find another moveset very quickly. You mentioned a third boss so you are probably already in the area that has it (scissor enemies). This moveset has aoe "pogo" on down + attack and is definitely easier to execute (even multiple times in a row on the same enemy).

I did the diagonal attack like 3 minutes in in the game. It's just the castlevania kick except it stops at some point. The problem is not executing it, but aiming it because it's diagonal. Eventually you'll miss and fall down. In castlevania it was a "flex" mechanic to move faster, not required in any way to platform. Glad to hear it can be upgraded

Some of your complaints are very specific to the first 5-6 hours and early areas of a very long and varied game, some are evergreen. This doesn't make them wrong, but I don't think it's a fair assessment of the work as a whole.
Anonymous No.720392213
>>720391651
I wouldn't call it an upgrade. It's a sidegrade really. If you prefer it, it may feel like an upgrade to you but some enemies and monsters are easier with the diagonal attack.

Metroidvanias aren't shit but they are inherently formulaic. That said, the formula just works, it's basically IKEA assembling a 7/10 game at this point.

First off, it's a subgenre of action adventure. Second, as far as action adventures go I'm saying this subgenre's pieces are especially easy to slot together since its namesake franchises did the heavy lifting part of fucking around and finding out. Cool, now copy the homework and maybe add a gimmick and aesthetic of your choosing. Congratulations, you have made a decent, functional game.
