i played it on ascent 7 solo and didnt think it was particularly bad, i only used a small handful of tools
i think today's kiln has a lot of sideways movement to rocks just out of reach, but if you are well fed then you can crawl diagonally and leap off towards them without excess energy
it appears to be a test of how well you know that strategy of crawling up then letting go and flying to a nearby foothold, there's like 5 different times i had to do it to progress

I think my gang and I could've managed but I fucked up my use of tools bad, as in accidentally used the rope cannon instead of the chain cannon at one point and then when we actually needed the rope cannon there was none.
I don't exactly understand the technique as you described it but we did have to go through with some fucked up jumps at times, maybe that's it.

I tried to make a mod where I could switch all player skins to Purple (for example after being blowgun darted), but it turns out that player customization is fully client side.

I would have to like fuck around with steam data requests and spoof messages to change customization options or something to get it working so I didn't do it.
Felt a bit too hacky (like in terms of legality) at that point.

It depends on generation, but I'd say Alpine is more generally annoying due to the blizzards; if you lack traversal tools, Kiln can sometimes be a bitch.
Now between Alpine and Mesa? I prefer Alpine overall because past Ascent 4, you have to deal with potentially both heat and cold in Mesa based on how you're climbing.
