I started Pokemon with Gen I and agree with everything that's being said there. Johto has huge problems likely specifically because they made those games as sequels to Kanto rather than the all new region formula they developed with Hoenn/Sinnoh. Johtofags seem to have this weird obsession of deflecting and namecalling whenever the blatant problems of their gen are brought up

This thing has added way too much over the years and moved beyond the scope of just being a polished up Crystal. It's basically it's own thing at this point. I liked it back in 2017 or whenever the fuck the original release was but nowadays I prefer to just play vanilla Crystal.

Its like people went back to gen 2 and skipped gen 1 entirely.
Gen 2 was amazing and fixed so many issues the first games had, sure post game was fairly empty but it was 10 times the content of gen 1 and gave you an entirely new place to explore and more battles.

I struggle to think of anything good about them. Johto is poorly designed dogshit and Crystal is easily gamefreak’s laziest singular release. Fixed fuckall flaws from the original GoySlop, added some little gay animated sprites, removed Mareep, and gutted half the Japanese exclusive content before localizing it (gs ball, online support, etc).
Shit games with trash pokemon in a boring region made up entirely of small linear grassy routes and unrewarding caves, full of underleveld Kanto mons from the first route to just before you’re fighting Red, awful encounter methods, horrible evo stone distribution. The only people who defend these trash games are fat balding retards who played it when they were 3.

the problem with perception of gen2 is that people going back to it live in a post-gen2 world and dont understand what gen2 did. they go back to gen 1 and think 'wow its so retro this is nothing like real pokemon everything is different that is so cool' and they dont realize that everything that makes pokemon games was defined at gen2. They go back and see things like the ruins of alph and they just think 'oh yeah this is their version of the expanding puzzle that you slowly solve over the course of the entire game as you unlock new moves and abilities' and dont even give a second thought to it because every ruin of alph clones are in every subsequent game. so on for everything else.

Of all Johto gyms, there are a total of just 4 Johto pokemon used, with one of them being a gen 1 evolution. Why didnt they want to show off their new pokemon? So much of this game seems obvious

Johto dex is awful in its distribution and type variety.

Of the five dark type lines: houndoom, murkrow, tyranitar, sneasel and umbreon... only umbreon is technically accessible in johto
The new dark type... is practically exclusively post game in it's debut

The new steel type is just barely better.
Skarmory is not in gold at all and only after gym 8 with zero trainer rep in the entire game. It's distribution is so poor, most players mistake it for being a Gen 3 Pokemon.
Steelix and Scizor are trade evos blocked until Kanto unless you knew to use thief on Magnemites.
Forretress is not steel until evolution and hidden behind headbutting trees exclusively.
Magnemite is the only feasible steel type to get in a playthrough, and it's a rehash from Kanto with the new type.

The only 2 new fighting types are Heracross, which is behind Headbutt trees, and Hitmontop, only available after the 8th gym with a convoluted evolution method

Fire types are also pretty bad. The 2 new lines, Houndour and Slumga, are both postgame exclusive. The Fire stone which can be used to evolved Growlithe/Vulpix/Eevee is locked to the postgame. Ponyta is only available after the 8th gym.

Gen II is objectively the worst in the series for team building.

I can remember going on the S.S. Aqua and battling the teacher with the Ledian. It was a new Trainer class and a Pokémon that I never would have used even though I probably had a Ledyba.

I remember Delibird and Skarmory and wanting Mantine and Gligar. I didn't have an Ampharos because why would I train anything but my starter? I did trade to get Scizor and Slowking, and I think when I heard about Dunsparce I looked for it. But no kid was autistically complaining about Gen II Pokémon availability. A Pokémon being rare makes you want it more, not less. And no child knows about movesets, base stats or cares.

For these, it's best to look at final evolutions since those are the ones people are going to be using. It's good to conider if the Pokemon are dual type and what they're stats and movepools are. There are a lot of Pokemon that end up being practically redundant due to this. It also makes you consider how badly certain types are treated.

For example, take a look at Electric in Gen 3.

That's it. All of them are pure Electric types, a typing there are plenty of already. Plusle and Minun are also low BST gimmick Pokemon that have to be used together. Electric was a fucking dire type to deal with.

You can use literally anything. Mightyena is your favorite? Linoone? Beautifly, Dustox, Swellow, Pelipper, Gardevoir, Breloom, Ninjask, Shedinja, Slaking, Loudred, whatever. When 99% of the GBs library was puzzle games and bad platformers. Pokemon was one of the very few games that let you save your game.
And gen 2 fixed a lot of the bugs and issues while expanding on everything with way better sprites (with colour), day/night cycle, breeding, time based events, held items and probably a bunch more.
Gen 3 expanded just as much, but it is a shame they didn't keep the day/night cycle and they should've done the physical/special split here already desu.
