like games in general, the 00s is actually when they started dying. the golden period was in the late 90s. before the industry created E3, CES used to be a huge event for games too, but E3 crowded it out of the games sphere. now that E3 is dead, i think some companies will eventually go back to CES, but it won't be like E3 debauchery because CES is a professional environment

18 years ago I went to a con late night event where some of the hot cosplayers were hired to play strip poker and do gag dubs for hentai clips. i went to a modern convention with a friend who's into cosplay and it was actually very disgusting. everyone is fat (especially the women) and/or deformed looking.

it goes far beyond nerds looking not put together. old conventions used to have a lot of mousy looking girls who were really cute but didn't bother with makeup or dressing nice. in the entire convention i saw 2 girls besides my friend who looked good, but they had horrific tatts and piercings, and were flanked by trannies and extremely fat women.

Nowadays I only go to American Renaissance, Jared Taylor's white nationalist conference, which is not far from where I live. It's a very nice place to meet intelligent and good looking whites. Back in 2013-15 I used to attend a gaming convention in Texas that was hosted by Screwattack.com. The event was absolutely amazing. The same was true of many great anime conventions. But year over year, they sort of got less amazing. I can't say it was just me getting older, but that was a factor. I think it had a lot to do with the nature of fandom in those days.

To describe the 2000s conventions through the early 2010s, you used to be in a rather niche, smaller circle. People in these convention spaces were not really normies at all but rather a bunch of people who were living in the moment and did not have robust social media networks beyond MySpace and whatever private forum they belonged to, which also had the same inner-circle feeling. If you had a camera, it was not all that great, and if you had a phone, it was definitely not a smart phone.

The people at these events were often all lacking in some degree of being normal and there was no convention for conventions (lol) that others could follow as a template beyond the few other examples. People were still enjoying fansubs in those days for the anime they liked and certain games that we don't think much about now were way less common due to region differences. Fire Emblem, for example, was a series that premiered in the US thanks to Melee, and it only started with the GBA titles. People didn't know anything except for the deep fans. This was true across all things.

I remember being in a room where they had an auction, and the auctioneer held up a shirt that said "I love Yaoi" in Japanese and all the girls in the room started screaming and bidding. It was hilarious. Yaoi paddles were a thing then too.

As for gaming, PC events and E3 showcases are a different breed. You can find pretty cool E3 show floor tours on YouTube from the 2000s.

Was also sitting in the back row and anyone sitting in the back row were legit fucked over because the dancers came down from the stage and danced right in front of people sitting in the front rows. "The Nintendo" (NES) was released and marketed as a kids toy.
