At the end of the day it’s an upscaled Switch 1 game (one that’s already targeting 60fps on decade old hardware, inevitably leading to some reduced detail), so I’m not too worried about the visuals in the desert area. All of the other zones have looked pretty great thus far. I’m hoping that the blurry textures are just YouTube compression not playing well with volumetric fog.

The one thing I am worried about is how prevalent the open areas will be. I’m hoping that it’s just a way to connect the different exploration zones without an elevator screen.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about this game thus far, it’s that the trailers don’t really seem to do it justice. The demo from earlier this summer looked so much more interesting and dynamic than the trailers led me to believe.

I’m firmly in the “buying it anyway” camp because I love this series, but I am concerned at how well the game is going to do when every impression has been mixed from the public.

Not necessarily. It's entirely possible that the open world isn't intended to be something you spend most of the time in, but instead used as a go between with specific intended battles. The fact it's SO empty makes me think that actually exploring every inch isn't the intention, and that the game will be more like "you've got this item, you can now explore Base C" and then on your way to Base C you get attacked and fight on the bike in open areas that's the extent of the "open world". At the very least, it LOOKS like it's designed as more of a playground to fuck around on the bike in and not a world to actually explore.

Some amount of backtracking is part of the identity of the genre. You get new abilities to more thoroughly explore areas you've already been through. Well, they've done it, they've finally turned Metroid into a fucking open world game. I am disappointed but not entirely turned off (yet). Everything else looks just about as good as what they've shown before. If the game is good, then it will be in spite of the open world areas, not because of it. From the looks of it, the open world really is just gonna be the hub world between specific area, with random crap along the way. But, what's the point? Occasionally stepping off to solve a puzzle just doesn't seem like it'll fit with Prime's gameplay.

No, the seeker missiles. Right after you get to the Torvus temple you have to go all the way out of Torvus and then back in again using the same route.

That was a problem Prime 1 had, they added the hint system to mitigate confusion. If Prime series had one problem in my opinion it was padding. There's developer interviews on youtube where they describe fearing players would beat their game too quickly. Nintendo's solution was to add the triforce hunt into Metroid Prime, Retro also added cutscenes to elevators despite the rooms in the game loading as you approach doors.

Having to go back to Torvus Bog exists sure, but you do open up a shortcut to take at the entrance rather than going through the zigzag with the monolift again. That can be considered to apply to seeker missiles at least. The door in and out of the area is a super missile door, and you initially enter the area via the dark world portal. However when you leave to get seeker missiles you can take the shortcut and simply open the door to the area this time.
