Is the VRAM shit really that much of an issue? I have an 8GB GPU on my laptop and I always get about the performance I expect from games, even reasonably demanding shit like Space Marine 2 and Alan Wake 2. I was looking into getting a desktop 5070 now that it's cheap but people talk like the 12GB VRAM is a death sentence for that card

This is a $1,000 card btw that markets itself as a 4K GPU, 4K with modern engines is incredibly taxing on VRAM when you turn on the fancy ray tracing features the card boasts about. And even then, this is a $1,000 it should be useful for more than just gaming, I'm not even asking for crazy amount of VRAM, just the adequate amount for the card's speed.

You have no options. Want more VRAM? "Fuck you" is what the vendors say. A headless compute accelerator is not an alternative. Only if you're willing to deal with some Shenzhen gooks can you have someone desolder and resolder high capacity chips but thats a huge gamble with zero warranty.

They are better than they were 10-15 years ago, you can get a good screen, sober design and good amount of performance out of them, they are still limited by form factor, cooling and power draw so you're not gonna get desktop equivalent performance unless you drop $5,000+ on one. They have a bad rep because people don't take care of them, but if you get one from a reputable manufacturer, undervolt, regularly clean it and change thermal compound when needed, keep it elevated when gaming for air to circulate underneath there is no reason for it to fail prematurely.
