RE8's main problem is it both wanting to connect itself to the series, see Chris, evil BSAA, the Spencer retcon. While also keeping it as disconnected from everything else in the franchise to appeal to the people who started with 7 and solely care about Ethan.
Capcom should've just picked one or the other instead of fucking over both. Commit fully to the RE side and keep Ada in as well, or just scrap all the main RE stuff and focus on a story that might as well not even be called Resident Evil at that point

The series was becoming another Gears of War clone by then so it wasn't much better. At least the "Outlast bits" were just a minority part of the new trilogy and remakes, most of the game in each is still dealing with common monsters traditionally with shooting and ammo management.
