GTA3 really stands out from the rest of the series
Though it lacks many of the defining features and quality-of-life improvements seen in later games, the vibe it has going on is so goddamn thick that it compensates for any such inadequacies. Soon you don't even remember that you can't jump out of cars. Did you know that the way the game is programmed, the weather in the city is almost always rainy or foggy, with only a small chance of sunshine?

And it makes sense, really – Vice City is famously incomplete, with large chunks of the map being empty, and San Andreas is so ambitious that it can’t provide this level of attention to any individual location. Of the classic trilogy, only GTA3 is this complete vision of the one, specific place.

GTA3 is the pinnacle even though I think VC is the better game, but only because it came later and despite being rushed, had the foundation of GTA3 to fall back on.
SA is a buggy mess but again built upon what GTA did.
There is a reason GTA3 is one of the most influential vidya ever made.

There is something so fucking comfy about the claustrophobic environment that makes the city fees great.
No game, not even GTA4 have been able to recreate that feeling.
Still I am hoping GTA6 can really recreate the VC miami the way it could not do in VC.

I never played GTA III, but I’ve just replayed VC and that game sucks. If you have fond memories of it, it’s better to keep them and not play the game anymore.

Vice City was a bigger deal for me. More nostalgia attached to it. It all comes down to personal preference.

for me it's III and IV
those games really gave you freedom, like beating missions by stealing cars first and planting bombs in them (using packie's bomb in IV)
IV was also perfect with the difficulty
watch modern gamers play it and they never bother to aim for the head, or try zooming in, or worse yet refine their aim before shooting, they always just spray directly into the body its sad
IV has perfect checkpoints: it doesn't have any - but if you fail a mission you can open your phone and answer the text asking if you want to retry it, and it starts right away
V just gives you fucking checkpoints several times through all of its shitty linear missions
the OG games felt painful sometimes forcing you to drive back and forth to mission markers, but IV solved this and then V completely fucking drove it into the ground
i'm looking forward to seeing just how shitty and railroaded the VI missions will be
i bet not a single one of the missions will be difficult too, just slop being served while you sit back with your mouth open

>ITT: Nostalgia googles

It's not that great, you just grew up with it, and your brain interprets the game with some fraction of how you did it, when you were a kid.

San Andreas is easily a better game, from the same generation. GTA5 is easily better in every aspect.

i used to love messing around with 8ball's bombs. i would rig an ignition bomb onto a car, park it in a shitty neighborhood and wait for a carjacker to take it. i don't even think npcs randomly steal your car in gta anymore

I only ever rented GTA3 and never finished it. By the time I was ready to ask for it for Christmas, VC was already out. But it's hard to shake it form my mind, it did have an aesthetic. VC and SA also had their own aesthetic too. But something about the gloominess of 3 was great. It just always felt cold but strangely comfortable.
It also felt like another Ocarina of Time moment, seeing a series transition from 2D to 3D so well. I played GTA1 and London at least before it. Only a few years between Ocarina and GTA 3 but as a kid it felt like a lifetime, like I was experiencing another gaming milestone. Ending it now before this becomes a blogpost.

>lacks many of the defining features and quality-of-life improvements
like the former vice city dev said while looking at the reverse engineered code had they been allowed to finish reverse engineering up to san andreas, theoretically they could have backported all of those features. their implementations are rather simple and it's all in the same engine.

can't imagine claude crouching and rolling howeverthoughbeit

Meh, the aesthetic sure.
But it was a lot more fun rasing money to buy properties in VC.
And the vehicle trick jump locations in VC were cooler too.

For me, it'll always be Vice City
>neon, palm trees, open collars, bikinis, tommyguns, classic cars, the mall, dance club, stripclub, demolition derby and LANCE VANCE

GTA san andreas is objectively better,
it has more content, characters, story, functions and mechanics, but it does not have nearly as lovable and nostalgic setting as the miami beach strip
It did have Las Venturas and the area 51 meme though, so that's a huge plus that easily tips my opinion

I love the 80s aesthetic but the VC map looks claustrophobic compared to LC. I think the Everglades and the Gator Keys would have been a game changer.

no crouching in 3. not even in the demake. there is a mod for it and it looks bad.
vc had crouching but you couldn't move
sa had crouch + crouch movement, and rolling, but you can't fire while crouching and moving

then obviously IV had all the movement shit figured out by then but IV and V turned mostly into chest-high walls gameplay.

the thing people must always forget about was that gta3 was very much like gta2 in spirit. the leap to 3d was mindblowing enough, everyone wanted to see what made it from the 2d games into the 3d world, that nobody cared movement wasn't that advanced.

Something I loved in gta3 and vc was the exploration rewards with random weapons, hidden packages and kill frenzies. It just wasn't the same in sa and forward. Never understood why they downgraded that aspect.
Anonymous No.720502002 [Report] >>720502668

i still seethe about kill frenzies in these threads sometimes. i can understand their omission from sa from a storytelling perspective because instead we got gang wars, but the gang wars were too easy and claiming all the territory was boring as shit.

we're so far away from the arcade gameplay era that i don't think it's ever coming back

Bah gawd if bruce spent a week modelling that bike chase then you are going to fucking see it. The biker WILL be invincible and you WILL NOT be able to stop him by any means until he reaches his destination for an epic wipeout.

they definitely don't. they already didn't in GTA 4 and you know GTA 5 downgraded absolutely everything non-essential, and even some essential stuff like cops being able to ram you off the road using actual car physics.
