Just google some Sillytavern (ST) guide. It's like the chatgpt site, but for character chatting, and you can swap out which AI it talks to in the background.
Avoid any and all local model faggotry. Put $10 into openrouter.ai, choose "sonnet 3.7" as model and try to have fun. chub dot ai for character cards. They moved the DL button to the bottom because they're jews. Should take like 20 minutes of work if you just keep following mr tutorial.

If you want a quick test try one of the web services, most offer some kind of free trial. Just be aware they're going to be a lot worse than the good shit. For a beginner it's good enough though.

If anything talks about "local" you ignore it. They are very low quality, massively more complicated to set up, slower, need big hardware and the only thing they offer in exchange is privacy. Anything else is cope. Open source can and will not beat the absolutely insane amounts of money which corpo pumps into their models.

The #1 hamstring with AI right now is context length. For LLMs, there's 2 kinds of memory. A "long term memory" which is the data the model was trained on. Books, forums, websites, etc. Then the "short term memory" which is what you personally send it. The short term memory is the context. And it's extremely limited in its current form. Most home setups for local LLMs can't get over 16,000 tokens. (I know Grok's theoretical limit is 1,000,000 tokens but the actual context length is gate-kept behind subscription plans.)

The problem is once you reach that limit, the LLM will start forgetting things. It will forget you married someone, or that you raped their daughter, or that you drive a red sports car, or wear a suit. And it will start talking about your girlfriend from work, her son, your blue SUV, and your basketball shorts. So it breaks all immersion.

Until the context issue gets ironed out, AI is really only good for quick stories. Nothing too big.
