Cultural phenomena like WoW. Everyone in school talked about Halo even the jocks. At least in the US it was the most popular shooter before Modern Warfae came out

I was only able to experience Halo online during its twilight years on the 360 but Halo 3 and Reach Online were so fucking good, Halo 4 was alright but it got old fast.
Needless to say I am forever grateful to both Halo 3 and especially Halo Reach for forging the bonds I have with my two best friends

It was the moment that dude bros and nerds shook hands and found common ground and even friendship. Unfortunately, (((they))) couldn't have that. Now the dude bros have moved on from vidya or play CoD/Fortnite while the nerds have turned into trannies.

massive amounts of fun, anyone with a 360 had halo, it wasnt even something you needed to ask
unlike cod (its main rival back in the day), halo was more fun as you had forge (sandbox mode) so you could do tons of custom lobbies and modes. it was more than "run and gun" like cod was.
not to mention spawning tons of fanworks like machinima (while it didnt start with halo,it got a massive surge in popularity from it)
it was truly an epic time to be a console gamer, no generation since then has captured that magic

For me, it was the Custom Forge maps and Custom Games that made Halo 3 memorable.

It was honestly impressive how easy it was to get a Custom Games lobby set up without a server/match browser on console. You could just go play a couple of Big Team Battle matches, then literally invite every recent random player you played with, and then you'd have no trouble getting a full lobby of playing Duck Hunt.

PS2 was the better console with better and more games, GameCube and GBA were better too along with PC gaming. It's a shame that the OG Xbox was only know for the overrated Halo series since it had better games than it. Halo CE was mediocre, but it was the best Halo game.

I played it at my friend's house. He had Xbox, I had Sony and nintendo. The Halo games were okay to play once, but after that it was pretty boring. He wound up coming over my house more. I remember playing a lot of smash and bloody roar and four swords. Also he touched my penis while we were playing crystal chronicles.

I remembering having CE on my PC and getting board with it. I played Quake and Unreal more. Quake was good, Unreal was meh. Also remember being incredibly dissapointed with cod4. I had a 360 for awhile but i sold it and got a ps3. When orange box came out and I got into steam for tf2 and l4d and later played wow for awhile.

It's really funny how time marches on and the games that arena FPS autists used to shit on are now looked back on fondly while shitting on current generation of shooters, not because time is a cylinder but because things are still getting worse and people re-evaluate things more.

They really aren't. It's more like Halo tards lamenting their poor decisions while not understanding they're the root issue.

I went to a walmart midnight launch for halo 3, the line wrapped around from electronics back to the hallmark cards. I remember being in the card section area and the employees were hyping up the line by handing out mt dew and homemade cupcakes with green frosting and a number 3 on them. When I finally got to the front there was chatter about making sure that anyone that bought the limited edition steel case to check their copies since they were reported to come loose and scratch the discs, some people were scattered around crouched on the floor opening them up to check. Shit was kino.

halo multiplayer was not that good. the campaigns are much better. the mp always existed in some kind of middle zone between fast stuff like cod and maybe hero shooters, and stuff like battlefield or something i don't know. its why people lament it being gone so much, because other games do one thing or the other.

It's because we enjoyed them with our friends and we didn't give a shit about the gameplay faults back then. It was accessible and cheap.

I'm old and teenage me back in 2007 never gave a flying fuck about "hurr durr it's not counterstrike or quake, Babby's first fps" whining.
Anonymous No.720530416 [Report]
everyone going over to a friends house to split screen halo was a hell of a time. I'm not sure kids nowadays do this anymore. I had a friend who took the lid off his xbox so that we could install a game to the hard drive, pop it out once the disk verified, and then LAN over two small tv's. When halo 3 came out everyone at school was talking about it, it was a huge deal at the time.

This was the greatest trilogy of console shooters of all time. The industry was at its peak for console online FPS at this point. It has been all downhill since. Really is too bad COD eventually went on to mog the Halo franchise so hard. Basically worked MS/343 into forever changing Halo. They should have kept the formula intact even if it meant having to be a distant second to COD. By changing Halo they have done irreparable damage to the brand.

Anonymous No.720532532 [Report]

Funny part about that is Halo already HAD the cod formula. Except it wasn't the cod formula because cod copied it from Halo 2. All they had to do was keep the same menu and matchmaking system and none of the gameplay differences would matter at all. Instead they hid people's stats, made it impossible to party up, and turned game chat off by default.
Anonymous No.720532571 [Report]
>>720528312
I don't get why they ever hated it in the first place. They still had their PC's. Halo was a console FPS made to accommodate for those limitations. It carved out its own niche. It wasn't Bungie's fault people copied much of the gameplay mechanics (grenade + melee buttons, regenerating shiled/health, two weapon limit). Halo was a lot more of a team focused sort of shooter than what you would find out of Unreal or Quake. That is where Halo's strengths shined. Too bad FPS will never go back to this though because people would not appreciate a game like Halo 2 or 3 today. It would be too basic for them and they would litter it with shitty skittles colored weapon skins.

There was pvp and it happened but was just kind of gay and existed like how it is now. There wasn't really any difference except that there's been a massive amount of skill bloat nowadays. Utter shitters could scrape by back in those days, now not so much, the mandatory skill level is just too high for cazzies to hack it anymore. I mean back in the day I could fucking play with my mom and hack it and have fun while doing it, that's just not possible anymore

I remember the first time I ever felt so tired that my eyes started to glaze over and I could see but not really perceive what was going on, it was while playing halo 3 at 430AM at my friends house. His dad had to come in and tell us to go to sleep because we'd been playing for over 12 hours at that point.
Good memories.

Halo 3 was the last shimmer before the sun set on western civilization.

For one brief moment in 2007 everything aligned, The midnight launches, the Live action BELIEVE ads, the Xbox Live chatter that connected entire neighborhoods and schools.

It was a shared cultural rite, the final time an entire generation moved in sync before the internet atomized cultures into a thousand disconnected feeds.

The slogan "Finish the Fight" rang louder than its marketing roots even if it maybe didn't realize that it was aiming for something bigger than the frame of someone's chunky CRT or newfangled HD TV that transcended the screen.

In hindsight it was luminous, the last flash of cohesion at the twilight of the Bush years, when the world was silently shifting into something colder and more fragmented.
The last mass campfire where everyone gathered, played and believed in the same story.
What came after was endless wars, financial collapse, the slow suffocation of culture under algorithms.
But for a brief season, Halo 3 held back the night and in that glow you can see the last true heartbeat of a civilization that didn’t yet know it was fading.

It's over.

Yeah, very poetic, to be more frank about it though, culture just died in the final years of the 00s. Smartphones became a thing, everyone had access to the internet at all times, and it destroyed us all. In the future, IF there is a future, they're going to look back at this time and point at the proliferation of easy internet access as where it all went wrong.

It really was a one two punch of the increasing popularity of smart phones with the rise of social media at roughly the same time. Then add on the clearly manufactured and forced culture shift Cultural Marxism that suddenly showed up around 2013 and it's no wonder everything went to shit. Hell, the last point is only NOW starting to get slightly better as the wind slowly changes...12 years later. As for the rest I don't know how you can save it, there is too many third worlders and phone posters now online.
