A full return to form. Bring back the vibes from //SIGN and //IMOQ. Focus on the mystery+the characters, not the one central character. Less Haseo/Kite/Kirito, more the ensemble cast of //SIGN. There are a few things that .hack handles much better than SAO, one of them is making you believe these characters are the kind of people who play MMO's, SAO falls short in the character department. Maybe if what was formerly Gasco and all the neighboring countries had a dark age after the continent was fractured, and it was so bad that all historical records prior to it were lost, and then during that dark age the race relations between Felineko and Caninu in Shepherd got so bad that the Caninu tribals killed all the Felineko, it could work. But that still makes the timeline really crowded.

A simpler answer would've been to set the game during the Incantation Wars, but they didn't do that.

It has a neat combat system based on attacking/parrying filling a "posture" bar, and applying talismans to complete that damage.
The lore and aesthetics are described as "Taopunk" which is sci-fi + chinese mysticism. I usually hate Wuxia and chinkwank but it does a perfectly good job as making it cool and understandable to western audiences.
The characters are all very interesting, especially the relation between the main char and his sister, and his old and new friends.
It has some suffering but unlike Fuga 2/3 it's not as gratuitous, and the game ends up way higher on the scale of optimism.

The issue is that they're too advanced for what was seen in the history panels in Solatorobo. The key word is "tribals", they were basically like the barbarian tribes of Europe. That was also the first time robos were ever used. You see the ones in the picture are very primitive, hell they might even be made of wood or bug carapace. Somehow they went from being a centralized industrialized society, to be being sub medieval. It takes 400 years for them to start looking like the stuff you saw every day in Gasco.

Then there's the racial separation of the caninu and felineko. They live in different countries and are so separated that there are no felineko to speak of in Shepherd and no Caninu to speak of in Abyssina. Which then led to 500 years of constant race wars between caninu technology and felineko magic.

A thousand years between Solatorobo and Fuga. The Hundred Lilles War was 611 years before Sola. That leaves only 389 years between it and Fuga. 389 years is not a long time in civilizational terms. Not long enough for all of the Gasco and Berman's technology to weather, nor for the stories of the way life was to be forgotten. And yet the Caninu are reduced to riding bugs, fighting with spears, and think robos are a brand new technology.

And for every new game in the series where the world doesn't end, that gap gets smaller.

I just had a horrible thought.

What if CC2 makes a Sola sequel, and its set something like ten years after Sola, and you meet the Sola cast in it half way through. Only when you meet Red, he's a senile old man in a wheel chair. The reason being that he was never built to last, so once Baion's plan was done, he started to to wither away because of his accelerated aging. And you get to see the look of despair in Elh's eyes from the knowledge that despite giving up her immortality to be with him, she's still going to outlive him by decades. Alongside the utter tiredness of Chocolat, who's had to give up her dreams of finding a man and settling down because she has to do all the hunter work now to support them.

I don't want this to happen, but it really sounds like something current CC2 would do if given the chance.

I could actually turn that into a decent drama instead of just plain misery porn by toning down the aging. Instead of being in his 80s, Red is in his late 40s when he should be in his 20s. Red is still working as a hunter, a very successful one in fact, because saving the world and being a national hero is an excellent resume builder for a mercenary. He's not old yet, but he is starting to show his age. Lines on his face, hairs going grey, not being as spry as he used to be. He's been able to pass it off as being from working himself too hard, but he knows that won't work forever. Elh's got her suspicions too, but he's just too scared of what will happen if he tells her, how it might hurt her, and how it might ruin the few years they have left.

The story would be more about him coming to terms with his aging, and accepting that he can't keep living as that adventurous free spirit forever, probably while some smaller scale conflict than the one from Sola is going on in the background.
