Those countries are strong because of colonial/mercantile connections that are enabled by their access to sea combined with an emphasis on naval power to protect those connections. pre-plague Athens, Late Roman Republic, Carthage, Spain, the UK, the US, etc, every world "superpower" has fit this mold. More land based Empires such as Russia, France, Persia, USSR, etc can keep up this kind of dominance/performance in the short term or in their local area, but to exert imperial control more extensively/long term you need a trade empire and a navy to protect it and to project power

Yeah, of course battleships became obsolete with massed airpower. But before that, you needed a battleship to take on a battleship, and even after that they were useful as tough, large weapons platforms. That's like saying that in hindsight, armored knights were useless lumps of metal because after centuries of dominance they could eventually be brought down by barely-trained peasants with a matchlock.

It's good. Fast, agile, cannons pack a punch and can melt anything from battleships to destroyers (the former you need to hit the superstructure), lots of smoke charges, the speed buff lasts quite a while, and very high HP. Alas, at tier X everyone and their mothers carry hydro and radars, so you better watch out for them. Don't bother using torps like jap dds, they're slow and have anemic damage, use them to negate areas. Italian line dds are made mainly to destroy other dds, prioritize them as your target.

Battleship is the biggest and heaviest and with the highest firepower and stronger armor, they are the flagship basically.

Destroyers are much smaller and their focus is speed and maneuverability above all else, they intercept and destroy other ships with torpedoes.

A cruiser is like a smaller battleship, not as small as a destroyer, usually loaded with anti-air to support the other ships.

Because naval transport was *the* method for large-scale trade up until ~200 years ago, before trains or larger-scale land transport. If you didn't have a coast or a river, you could only trade in small quantities, and couldn't enjoy the benefits of the economies of scale. The bigger your economy as a result, the more you can flex militarily and the more you have to protect, ergo the bigger the navy and the bigger military presence.
