Yeah seeing the way society changed from before to after the nukes was cool, hell the final act where tokyo gets flooded and everyone that survived scrambling for the only unflooded piece of land was great too. Reminds me of how in SMT3 you saw the manikins pointlessly trying to climb the tower of kagutsuchi after their spiritual leader died, they have no way of affecting the outcome of what transpires there but they're filled with an utter sense of hopeless desperation that they might as well die trying.

Because doing so would first require access to a demon summoning program to catch a demon to fuse with which while distributed widely right prior to the apocalyptic events of the prologue probably still isn't as widespread as it could be. Also wouldn't Yama/Enma smite the fuck out of you for using demons since the truth is chaos in SMT1 all about demon supremacy and any humans actually thinking they're going to rule in a world of str is huffing pure copium?

>Tying up the Greek tale of Echidna the mother of monsters siring Cerberus with Pascal "evolving" to Cerberus after a demon fusion, itself mostly a reference to DDS:MT giving the Nakajima Cerberus as a mount,.
I know it's a GBA hindsight addition instead of the original script, but this is still supremely kino writing.
I look at things like Fate and Percy Jackson's use of mythology in the modern day and even if SMT hasn't penned a new Paradise Lost or anything so many other things they just seem so surface level with their modern fantasy writing compared to it. Folklore is often used like props instead of characters in their own right.

That's something I really liked about SMT1 and 2's framing, to the demons the small party of humans were often seen as the oddities intruding in their eons old way of things.

Yeah but even as minimal as it it still:
>developed its characters well
>sells you on the relationship between the MC and Aogami and the revenge arc fueled by it
>uses narrative foils, parallels and metaphors (which most video game stories don't bother to do anymore)
>interesting use of mythology
>good world building
>fitting conclusions
It did everything a proper story should do. The only thing that frustrates me about V's story is that it doesn't feel "finished" and not in the way you're probably thinking. Towards the end of the new route a lot of information is dumped on you all at once and none of it is really elaborated on. It's not like when people bitched about the Mandala Cycle, because that actually was explained through the game, it's stuff like Yoko and Tao's real identities, the impact on other universes Satan says you'll have, Aogami realizing he's Susano-o and that he's had a heart all along (finally) but never talks about it. Things like that. Amanozako's bullshit with a second soul inside her is open ended too, but if you give more info on the creation goddesses you would get more info on that too by extension.
It feels like there should be more story told there but I have no idea if they plan to do something with it or not. It kind of feels like they are going to make some kind of DLC for VV because of all this. That and the game needs a Switch 2 update.

I think that "God" in 1, which isn't really referred to as YHVH, is probably supposed to also be some sort of an All-Father figure for the gods who accept his rule, in contrast to the Chaos route where the many gods and demons are trying to reclaim their power and status. The fact that Vishnu is also working for God and will join you in the Law path kind of convinced me that this is probably the case. It would make sense as the reason why Deities are classified as Law in this game too.

I've been giving SMTVV a shot because it was recommended as a starting point. While the battle mechanics seems funny, the map is starting to feel like ubislop. I've just beaten the first boss. Will the map mechanics get worse or should I go for IV?

the countdown escape before you and your country is about to get literally ICBM'd into nuclear oblivion
Frankly every single pre apocalypse moment in SMT1 still mogs literally EVERYTHING else in the franchise atmosphere wise.
It's insane how ahead of its time SMT1 was, even nowadays you don't get games with themes and atmosphere like that outside of some generic urban fantasy (which is still quite rare)

Yes, and definitely better than the original unless you're one of the autismos gungho about the imperial rising sun flag being changed to the generic japan flag

It is what it is. What are you even looking for in a JRPG? If you don't like the ubislop lmao that's pretty much SMT V in a nutshell dude you gotta have the tism to clear out the map or you won't enjoy it.

I beat the kyuuyaku megami tensei version.
I have no idea why I did that, shit was not fun but I got hooked on it for some reason.
I remember playing through the third area (which is huge) in like 1 day and I started feeling nauseous looking at those grey hallways for so long.

same. I also wish they'd start off in Japan and gradually go to other countries right before climaxing in Israel-Palestine. Would be perfect.

Hi, im sure this has been asked a lot and I read through a lot of it, but I have a rather specific question: I played persona 5, enjoyed it but got a bit tired with the amount of text/lesser gameplay, cause gaming sessions felt like reading sessions (nothing wrong with it, but I wanted to play with my personas) but I pushed through because I really liked the story and cinematics. I started playing P4 a while ago but didnt get far, same with Tokyo Mirage. But at the same time I want to because what I enjoy the most from a rpg is the story.

After reading many posts, im inclined to play SMT more than retaking persona (4 or 3) but im unsure because many posts talk about non existent/bad story. I surely want more gameplay, but I want a good story too, I know it seems contradictory.

In case you guys convince me to play persona, it will probably be p4 or p3 reload, but in case its smt, im not sure what game to start with. Is playing the mainline series in order important? Story/lore wise? I have a 3ds and a friend offered to lend me his smt games (he owns them all and persona Q 1 and 2 too) but Im also open to playing any other title in steam if its a better approach (must be pc tho, no other consoles aside from 3ds)

Thanks a lot for your time and answers!.

For Mainline: III, IV, and VV are all decent starting points. Raidou is an action RPG.

Not necessarily. Gameplay wise 1 and 2 are very different from 3, which is different from Strange Journey, which is also quite different from 4 and 5. I'd say that you should just play the first one and see whether or not you like it, but liking the first two doesn't guarantee that you will like the others, and vice versa.
Storywise only 1 and 2 are explicitly connected, so besides that you can just start from wherever you like. I think 3 and 5 are connected in some ways, but I've never finished 5.

Emulation should be easy for most of the titles though.

One of these days I really should play the first two games, I've played everything since Nocturne.

4's gameplay is Apocalypse's but infinitely shittier. You must play on easy and only care about the story.

I also beat that version. Got memories of being stuck in the hallway in the fire area outside the save point for around an hour just getting into encounters with 8 flame men and other retarded set ups.

SMT IV is the game for you. Given what you liked about Persona 5, IV Apocalypse might also be to your liking
