The few things that were Kojima's vision were barely an actual presence of the plot (Mainly the Old Snake and War Economy shit which ultimately don't amount to anything). Variations not withstanding, so no distinction between PS1 and Twin Snakes-

1 is the worst, but it's not bad it's just simplistic.
4 at least has polished gameplay and that kickass final battle.
V's gameplay is probably the best of the series, and the story is good it's just missing a few pages from the book, like Eli's fate and whatever the fuck was going on with the jeep ride with Skull Face.
2's gameplay was 1 but better in every regard, and has the message at the end that's becoming more true every day.
3 has 2's gameplay but better in every regard, and it's story while not a poignant, is a solid foundation to rebuild everything in the series off of.
I admit I might be placing PW a little high because I like seeing Big Boss in his prime, before everything went screwy.

MGS2 was my first ps2 game and I loved it so fucking much as a kid, that I was even somewhat disappointed when 3 came out and it wasn't a direct sequel. Still really enjoyed 3 for what it was.
When 4 was announced I was so unbelievably hyped. I thought it might be about Snake going against the "Patriots" and rescuing Olga's son (translation error I guess but whatever). Then I saw Old Snake and I thought okay, cool I guess.
And then I played the game and I can't even tell you how fucking much I hated every aspect of it. All the memberberries were aimed at me and they were FUCKING RETARDED. Nanomachines everwhere.
