I assume in the next 50 years AI will be quite potent and lead to games that actually feel like you're part of an actual world, but I don't think you'll see the good kind of AI being used in games in this decade unless they make some dedicated AI hardware for your machine. Like how you have CPUs and GPUs maybe an dedicated AI processor that is dedicated to AI. It would be kinda fun if you had your bog standard RPG, but your actions actually would affect the entire world. Like for example you hunt pretty much all boars around your starting village and suddenly there is a shortage of boar meat in the village you start out, vendors from across the map get word of it and start trading more boar meat to your village, but that also means that bandits set up at trade routes towards the village. And that's just one tiny thing tha could happen if you emulate a world rather than try have to program every single scenario individuallay.

Procedural generation in games has been around for 30+ years and it has barely improved at all. This AI slop is just more of the same, it's never going to be "smart" and actually make a game better than something designed.
Anonymous No.720642439
it has potential. inzoi is the only game ive messed with that seems to be integrating it as a core part and it works pretty good. like i can put 'he hates listening to music.' into the box and my zoi will no longer be obsessed with the radio. 'he likes to work out' would cause him to work out more. that kind of basic stuff is nice at least.

what ubi wants out of it though will be no different than skyrim's 'unlimited quests', though.

Thing is we're kind of reaching the limit of what generative AI can do and it's becoming very clear that not only is it not the path towards AGI, but that it also has been extremely overhyped, partially by people like you that see the impressive stuff it can do and project this idea of perpetual linear progress. In fact the type of AI that could generate a whole movie or an entire playable game is impossible with the current approach.

LLMs have exactly one use, and that's drafting/checking code, something's with very strict rules. My buddy made an entire website for his products without knowing a single thing about code. Some future prospects I imagine are translation and cryptography, but that's it.

All the other uses for LLMs are actual pajeet tier anti social behavior. pumping out fake articles to drive and revenue, cheating your way to a college degree, deleting your customer service department, etc.

I don't know if I'm overhyping it. You can already have basic roleplay with AI. If you somehow simulate a world with maybe 300-500 NPCs, all given specific parameters in what they can do do or how they can react to shit then you could easily fill a world for a game. I mean even if you consider making a bandit faction in a game, how many NPCs would you actually have to control by AI? Why not make it so that AI controls the bandit chief and he can spawn a max of 100 mobs which would be lower level bandits. Cities would be filled with maybe 5-10 named NPCs that control shit, but they are not allowed to act outside of their parameters (for example the mayor of a city would never try to become a king, but he would try to steer the economy of his nation by controlling what they produce) and so on.

AI has the potential to be great but the MBAs and South Asians creaming themselves at LLMs like their magic boxes are really overselling it. Unfortunately the lowered barrier to entry also means an increase in total slop, as has always been the case.

AI also needs to be democratized and ironically all the people bleating about muh art infringement to cope with it devaluing their hobby-jobs are just going to direct it into regulatory capture, stifling its development and usage by non-mega corps and the Chinese.

This is something that can already be done with traditional procedural generation, you could have an instance of Claude behind each NPC it wouldn't really make the game better because you're not gonna talk to all of the 300-500NPCs and talking to them would only amount to either flavor text or hints, you would still need other systems for quests, dungeons, NPC schedules, something to keep them in check and prevent them from spewing nonsense or ending up naked at the top of a mountain, etc..

Nobody is disputing the fact that AI is a tool that can facilitate and speed up development time, but the idea that you can prompt for a game and have the AI generate a fully functional 60hr RPG for you is in the realm of science fiction and will remain there until a breakthrough is made in the field.

I just don't know enough about AI to be honest, that's why I gave it a timeframe of maybe like 50 years. I feel like if you emulated 50 simultaneous AI chats you could simulate 50 different NPCs, but you would need one extra AI to actually oversee the developement and interconnectivitiy between them. That's why I'm also considering a dedicated AI processor in your system. In the end I'm just a layman who is ranting his hopes out, but I feel like there's potential and I personally can''t see what would be blocking it outside of the sheer hardware requirements.

The only thing the "AI" is going to be used for is producing infinite dogshit. TPTB are abjectly terrified by the competence of others, because it might be used against them, so they seek to stifle and snuff it out. Why would they ever let an AI be competent? SO it'll just be an extension of the infinite bot spam algorithms that they already use to drown out anything meaningful.

No one is going to bother with that for two reasons.
1. If they do, they will get whipped with scare tactics about heccin evil pedophiles and extremists and racists who will do totally evil things if allowed to have access to unfiltered AI and the developers will be responsible for the consequences
2. For the same reason why 90% of developers just go for Unity/Unreal and copy-paste assets, code and random plugins instead of making their own custom engine designed to handle what they have in mind and do it well - because the fast, simple, hands-off solution is right there so why put in extra effort?

How will it not be jarring to ahve more robust open conversations with NPCs and then get a dialog wheel for the actual impactful quests? I haven't worked that out.

I think AI will ultimately lead to the antichrist, but I do think AI would be really good for games like Dwarf Fortress which are less about artistic expression and more about providing the player with the ultimate sandbox experience

I think it will eventually be a useful tool. Developers have already been historically obsessed with procgen, AI is basically that except better.
It'll need to go through 5 or so years of game-ruining dogshit beta tests before it's actually good, though.

Why not? Something like a 2b par model with compression could run on moderate machines processing graphics, i just worry about output quality in that occasion.

In fairness there's a world of difference, AI has obvious and demonstrated usefulness albeit obviously overblown and irresponsibly implement. NFT and Blockchain shit was always a "1.Push NFTs 2.??? 3.Profit " tier scam that nobody could ever provide a practical use for. Like as far as I can tell people were just trying to monetize image-based encryption tokens.
Like obviously AI won't pan out like it's overpromised to do, nothing ever does, and will eventually suffer for that but it's nowhere near as useless as NFTs.
