1-4
Play zero mission instead of 1 since you should anyway regardless if you want to play the actual 1 too for the sake of experience. Play AM2R for the same reason with the second game. I don't recommend the 3DS Samus Returns because it's not a faithful representation at all, but you can play it anyway after M2/AM2R. If it leaves a sour taste in your mouth after playing 1-4, you can safely skip Dread since that's more of the same problems from the same dev. Metroid Prime is a whole other thing that tries to reproduce the experience in 3D and does a decent job of it, but the feel is necessarily quite different, and the games are basically fanfics. Other M is trash no matter how you slice it and there's no reason to play it at all. Pinball is a pinball spinoff, if that's your thing. Hunters is a weird objective-based arena/tournament shooter, don't expect Metroid in anything but name. Federation Force is Hunters but turned into a squad FPS with various stats for each weapon like damage and weight, and has nothing to do with Metroid outside of being a spinoff involving the marines of the Galactic Federation.
